I'm thinking that one needs to grow a bit before you should propagate it.

How do you know when it’s ready?

The Part you cut off has to have a couple leaves and still a couple nodes to go under the soil. And you want to have something left from the parent plant so that it will continue growing.

So propping self heading philodendron can be kind of a pain. Usually because under proper lighting their nodes are close together. You can lower the light so the etoliate, but it takes some time. Generally under the apical or top two petiole there will be a node, that can grow aerial roots. You can cut it below that and plant it or prop in media(i only say this cuz i hate propping them in water, they are dramatic moving to soil, in my experience) I'll post a Pic of a white knight to give you an idea

So here's you see the nodes/ aerial root buds on the right. If i cut under that. I'd end up with a top cut of 3 petiole and essentially a butt cut with one petiole. Keep in mind too not cut to close to the nodes, as you can damage the meristem. But like 1/4" should be okay.

You don't want to keep making cuts near the same node, as node exhaustion is a thing. It can take a bit. But people that let a plant grow out a little bit, cut. Let it grow out, cut. Over and over to sell props, will often end up with an exhausted butt cut eventually
