Hello all! In the beginning of October my boyfriend’s mom gave me all whole bunch of her baby propagations. They all came potted in miracle grow soil which, I personally hate because of the fertilizer beads 😅 I can already see some plants have old broken beads and others have some that havent broken and i hate not knowing exactly when my plants are fertilized. Now my question, would it be awful to repot all of my new plants in regular soil? she said she potted them herself a few weeks before giving them all to me, so they were officially repotted 2 months ago, i dont want to stress them out but again, I would like to get them on a strict fertizling schedule….thoughts or ideas on what i should do??

unless they’re very finicky plants like a baby alocasia just do it 🤷 i also like to have total control over the growing medium. just try not to make any more changes and they’ll be in good shape for the spring. it certainly wouldn’t hurt to wait until march to repot though

as i was doing research i saw a lot of ‘wait till spring’ and im thinking i might do that for the ones that are really thriving. i have two arrowhead plants and they are doing great, lots of new leafs. but i also have two pothos and a christmas cactus just dont seem to be thriving. my pothos are having yellow leaves and some black spots. i dont see any pests and ive been watering them regularly, theyve even been ‘perking up’ after their waterings but the leave colors makes me think they would benefit from a repot? my christmas cactus is the worst of them, it literally looks like white mold is growing in its pots and ive read they are prone to root rot???

ahh yes definitely repot that cactus ASAP. yes they are prone to rot and they do it quietly. I have both of my zygos in a really bark heavy mix — needs to be watered a bit more frequently this way, but they’re thriving (one was saved from quietly rotting in a pot that was too large) you can do whatever you want to that pothos, it won’t hurt it to repot now 😎

If you repot, might as well amend the soil with perlite, orchid bark, pumice, or whatever you use to loosen it up. Maybe consider adding worm castings too.

i have a variety of plants but after researching them all individually, ive found they all *can* be in all purpose potting soil. how do you choose what ‘soil’ type is best when it says it can work with a list of different textures? every time i try to do research on this i get mixed information that makes me confused and lost😅

I always use fox farm ocean forest as my base — and in general add in extra perlite and orchid bark for even better drainage. Things like alocasia and oxalis I keep in 1:1 fine peat and perlite. Outdoor succulents I keep soil free in a super gritty mix

it’s good to also have on hand a bag of fine peat, earth worm castings, and even vermiculite if you have any african violets

I’d say take her word , Propagation gifts in 2024 , people barely touch grass nowadays everyone’s on bo6. Just keep them in the pot they came in and water only when the top is brown paper bag dry. Taking it out and washing it , might just end up making it go poof. 💨 to dust and yellow. From the stress/ it doesn’t have suitable roots to handle another repot. Wait another week or two. Sometimes even longer. So they build roots.

ive had these babies since October. one of them i have had plans from the start to leave be (Chinese Hibiscus) because its already in bad shape and i doubt it would survive that stress. but like i mentioned before, my Christmas Cactus has a white crusty substance covering the top of the soil and its growing up the sides of the plastic pot, and it was having trouble before. one plant - which has a intricate name - i feel would benefit from a repot since i could offer better fertilization. its a flowering plant that has two new leaves, but already have a yellow tint to them…despite regular waterings like you mentioned and its in a spot that aligns with its sunlight needs

Ummm here's a thought beautiful lady ...gratitude... I would give anything to have a caring person gift me anything. But then, I'm a woman of a certain age. I have a feeling these "difficult cuttings" were done in love ❤️ Sometimes showing we care is tricky. Goddess richly bless you and ur gorgeous plants!❤️❤️☘️🌿🪴💯
