Story Sunday: Tell us how you got into plants? What started the obsession? 💚
My air plant isn’t from Illinois. It is from Mexico… So I was in Duran Durango Mexico and I saw a nice tree. I thought it was pretty cool so there was the air plant hanging from it. I thought it was a seed or a seedling but more Research told me that it was an air plant.
5 Me gustaHow cool!!
0 Me gustaI started off with this ficus I purchased from an estate sale. What a big fussy first plant lol. It started dropping leaves and browning so I went down a rabbit hole of educating myself about pruning, lighting etc. That was in Jan; my first ever plant..... No I'm up to 70+ plants! I might have a plant hoarding problem
8 Me gustaWow that happened fast! Love it!
0 Me gustaMy partner had an aerogarden that she never used for herbs, we ended up just seeing what would happen if we planted some peppers in it. Peppers when from a silly side project into actually being something we got invested in. We moved to an apartment early this year and found out the peppers were not going to do well how we had them planted and I bought some adequate sized planters, moved them over, and ended up with extra empty planters because it was actually packs of planters not just individuals, oops. I’m not good at remembering to take care of things so I never had any interest in plants but suddenly I was taking care of these peppers just fine, so we got her some more plants to fill out those planters. Then while we went to buy seeds to keep growing vegetables, she convinced me to get her a pothos from the store. Then we realized we needed more things to take care of the pothos and ended up with a bunch of succulents when supply shopping again. Then instagram started showing us all these cool plants and how to take care of them, and my friend had inspired me with her cool witchy shelf with some plants and books and skulls and all that, so i bought a shelf for plants and cool stuff. The shelf was a very slipperly landslide from a few succulents and 3 plants to now around 100 plants. And a fish tank. And now im addicted.
7 Me gustaHaha this is awesome!! They look quite happy!
1 me gustaMy father brings home plants from a dumpster from a plant nursery who though out plants that they didn’t have space for and a few dead leaves, so I asked if I can have an orchid and a compact corn. He said yes so I started to get more plants. Look at my profile to see all the plants I have
6 Me gustaWow you have quite the collection! So cool!
0 Me gustaThanks 😊
1 me gustaSo glad they have you to rescue them!
0 Me gustaMy mom loved growing plants. She passed away a year and a half ago and I inherited a water lilly from the collection. I have been actively learning how to keep it alive and have started to slowly grow my collection of indoor plants and outdoor plants since then. It's a hobby that's keeping her memory alive ♥️
6 Me gustaThis is so special 🥹 I am sorry to hear about your mom 💚
1 me gustaThank you ♥️
1 me gustaThis is so sweet 🥺 made me think of the song "Flowers" by Jonathan Ogden. Give it a listen when you are free to shed a tear or two. It gets me every time 😥 such a special song
2 Me gustaMy grandpa taught me to garden when I was very young. We'd both galavant around barefoot outside, planting seeds or harvesting. Also, my dad told me stories of his grandma's butterfly garden and it lit the fires of imagination in my young mind. He said the butterflies were so thick that he and his brothers would go outside and swing at them with baseball bats. 😡 As terrible as that story was, it's been my lifelong dream to have a native garden where pollinators thrive. 🦋☀️
2 Me gustaAww love this minus the butterfly hitting 🫣 I hope your garden dreams come true! 💚
1 me gustaMy son - he’s 6, and when we went to pick out flowers for the front porch this year, he asked to pick out a house plant “to make our house feel like a jungle”. We picked out a money tree and parlour palm. That was 60 plants ago. He is the sweetest most curious little soul who brings out the best in me and gets my trying so many new things.
2 Me gustaThis is amazing! I love when kids get into plants 💚
0 Me gustaI've always had a plant or two. I tried and failed growing herbs, more than once. I tried and failed at a veggie garden when I bought my house. I've always had cats, so I didn't think having inside plants was a good combo. Any plant inside was kept up high or at my work office. When my last cat passed away over a year ago and my dog, wasn't a fan about bringing in other kitties, I decided to expand my plant collection. I love picking up rehab plants or clippings or small starters and nurturing them, figuring out their needs, seeing them thrive, and overall the challenge. Surprisingly, I truly find the peace and joy having them around that fuels my obsession. BTW my dog enjoys them too, although she may get a little jealous of the time taken away from pampering her.
1 me gustaAww I’m glad you and your dog enjoy your plants together. They really are full of peace and joy!
0 Me gustaI have been on a mental health journey for the past 7 months or so. I was attempting to get out of my shell and socialize more. I met what has now become one of my best friends. I fell in love with a plant that she’d just purchased and repot, Raven ZZ, and she gave him to me. She taught me how to repot, encouraged me to find a plant or two or three, and introduced me to planta. 100 plants later I’ve truly found a passion for plants and realized I’m fairly good at caring for them. They give me peace while I give them care.
2 Me gustaAwww this is great! Planty friends are the best 💚
0 Me gustaI grew up with a backyard and my grandpa lived with us and tended to the garden. We had 9 white guava trees, two peach trees, 2 orange trees, 3 persimmon trees, one lime tree, an Asian pear tree and a pomelo tree. The trees were already there when we moved in and I loved spending time in the garden. My first plant was the sweet pea seeds, it grew bigger than me and I loved it. My aunt’s girlfriend moved in with us when I was 8 and she started a vegetable garden in the back and planted more roses in the front which made me love gardening even more. I struggle with container gardening today and the new owners converted that backyard to pure concrete but I hope to one day grow trees and flowers again. I received my first camera around the same time, these photos are my grandpa and my first sweet pea sprouts.
2 Me gustaHow special! I hope your time to grow trees and flowers comes soon 💚
