It's my first spring and summer in our new home and the former owners had extensive beautiful landscaping. We have about five hydrangeas and we thought we prune them correctly in the spring. Please forgive my lack of knowledge we have some of the old wood and the new growth and at this point I don't know if I should cut out the old wood and just let the new wood take over. Any guidance would be really helpful. And if I am supposed to cut them back how far down am I supposed to cut them.

if you need to prune it because it looks too “wild”, you can cut back the long sticks about an inch before the leaf! otherwise there’s no need to cut back the old wood! they only really need to be cut if they’re dead or rotted. I say let it grow and maybe give it a trim in the fall. hydrangeas are resilient and can survive a decent chop! My grandmother is a very green thumbed gardener and i’m lucky to have learned from her 💕

the place i circled is an example of where not to cut because that’s where the flowers will come from.. but if you do want to chop her now, the red lines are a rough idea of where you should chop if you want a more manicured look, while keeping pretty blooms :)

Wait to cut back until the fall and all of the blooms have died off. At that point you can shape them how you want and come next spring new shoots will grow off of the old woody stems. Hope this helps!

It does. I cut as you said and it looks a lot better. We will be better prepared for next year. Thank you again!
