Ugh, I transferred an orchid to LECA and murdered it. But I had some Hoya cuttings in it and they did fine.
1 j'aimemy philodendrons didn’t like it . At the moment I have Alocasia , Syngonium , calathea & my dwarf banana in pon & they are loving it . . I’ve not used it for any others so far . Oh! I did have maranta In Pon but it died but I was just starting out with pon so it’s most likely my fault it went crazy when I first transitioned it & looked great but I wasn’t sure about watering pon at the time. I would like to get another to try it again but maybe a younger plant . In my experience my younger plants transition better than the older ones .
1 j'aimeAll mine have done well, but with two notes/caveats: 1) I have never moved a non-tropical, and have an instinct against moving things like cacti and succulents over 2) More mature sensitive plants (Alocasia, Calathea) may shock a little at first and have drooping/yellowing of leaves, but if they replace those leaves happily and quickly then I don’t view it as a rough transition 3) I’m not gonna dispute anyone’s results and I certainly have less experience than the leca queen, but the “long method” to ensure success has never really made sense to me from a physiological perspective so I don’t do it. I can’t speak to how plants weather transitions from potting mix to water and then semi-hydro because I don’t do it. I’d imagine some do better and others worse.
0 J'aimeOh, I should note that I have monstera, alocasia, calathea, philodendron, amydrium, and begonia in semi-hydro right now. All have handled it well. I eventually transition all my calathea to a leca/perlite mix and I’m moving that way for begonia. Alocasia are heading this way too. So basically the ones people often describe as very fussy with watering. The others seem successful either way so far but I’m still testing growth rates.
0 J'aimeI def had a learning curve going into pon & my Alocasia I had at the time looked like they were on their way out but then these little babies started popping 😍. What is the long method?
1 j'aimeIt’s where you take the plant fully from soil into water for several weeks/months, let the “soil roots” die off and grow new “water roots”, and then move into semi hydro rather than going direct from potting mix to semi hydro.
0 J'aimeOk yeah I don’t do that . I just rinse the dirt off & plop them in pon . I feel like the sooner they are put in those conditions the sooner they acclimate . As long as they aren’t drowned in water they have been good that being said at first I did kill 1 or 2 until I learned the water intake for them . For me that’s a waste of time to wait for the roots ect especially since mine have grown “water roots” in the pon so it does the same thing when introduced to semi hydro anyway without waiting . I just started moving my Syngonium last weekend.
