Do sticky traps really work? Or what would you recommend for gnats?… | Anything about plants | Planta-Community

Do sticky traps really work? Or what would you recommend for gnats? I’ve done the need oil and it’s somewhat working. But my OCD is driving me insane when I see these little bugs flying around. I have way too many plants so I need some help. This is a quarter of what I have throughout the house.

You can add peroxide the next time you water, 50/50 ratio. Also systemic granules in the soil work as well. 😊

You can buy nematodes or use the beneficial bacteria in Mosquito Bits granules and BMC Microbe Lift liquid. These work along with sticky traps to completely eradicate the gnats. Also, look at the soil mix that makes it easy for gnats to breed and grow. Continuously wet soil or soil with materials like moss are slow drying which creates the wet environment that supports the eggs. My 200+ plants don’t have peat moss in it. I have sphagnum moss in three propagations. But, I let those dry down so the top soil doesn’t support the gnat eggs which need moisture. 🪴🍀

I’m going to look into this. I’ve been trying everything. I do have sphagnum moss so I hope that’s helpful.

Traps work alright but it's only targeting adults. I used systemic granules in a few of my plants and the gnats were gone within 2 weeks. Now I use Arber's bio insecticide once every 4-5 weeks. I started using the arber spray on new plants and haven't had issues since.

I use the sticky traps, a Zevo light, and bottom watering

I do the exact same thing but they also need a top watering about once every other month for a “flush” so I’ll do the hydrogen peroxide mix when I do that!

This is such a great solution! I’ve been delaying my top water flush, but I’m definitely going to give this a try ☺️🌱

What I have found that works for my 150 plants is granules

Depending on how bad the issue is. Pretty bad: BTI or granules diluted in water (kills the entire lifecycle after a few weeks). If it’s not too bad YET, one I don’t see talked about often enough is potting sand being added to the surface layer. Makes the soil unliveable for them. Personally, that’s all I needed & haven’t seen a gnat for months now.
