Lowes has a lot of good options. And you can pre-shop on their website by light conditions too. You can also go to the magnifying 🔎 glass on the bottom of the app, and choose recommend plant. And make/pic a site you want the plant in. And it will recommend based on the sites light, and your care. There's some really cute dieffenbachia, snake plants, pothos, etc. I can't think of anything distinctly colorful last time I went. Maybe some of the succulents if you have a site with bright light. If you like cacti avoid the ones with the red or yellow 'balls ' on top with a green base. They are grafted, and don't often live long.

You should get a spiderplant, if you are a begginer, they have the nicest leaves and are IMPOSSIBLE to kill!!

I recommend philodendrons bc they can live for decades plus you can get them small and they grow big with you throughout your life. Same with monsteras or snake plants 🙌🏻 good luck

I totally agree with hoyas. The big box stores are selling more varieties each year. Monstera Delisiosa last for years. Others: Coleus, false shamrock (oxalis triangularis), purple tradescantia, lemon lime philodendron, any pothos All of the above need proper care. Most new plants die from water issues (too much, too little) and too low light.

Chinese evergreens, dieffenbachia and philodendrons can be fun and colorful and easy to take care of. Have fun!

Two more options that you’ll be able to get at Lowe’s soon if you can’t yet: Coleus come in so many incredible colors. They’re often sold in the outdoor section as annuals but they will live for years indoors. Last year I think I spent $4 for four small plants. I put two together in a lil pot and it’s ready to move up to an 8” now. It loves light but still grows big and blooms like crazy even though I have it in one of my darkest spots and only water when it wilts. I’ve also found that it’s hard to over-water, which is nice for beginners. In a similar vein: you’ll see bags of bulbs at most stores right now; check out the caladiums. You can plant some in an indoor planter and within a few months you’ll have a large and full plant very inexpensively. Caladiums are aroids (same genus as things like philodendron and monstera) but native to Florida, I believe. For me the best part is that they’re bulb plants, so if life gets hectic and I’m not keeping up I just cut off the stems and dry the soil out to send it into dormancy. Then the next spring I can start them up again. A standard hardware store bulb will start with smaller leaves but quickly advances to ones that are 6”-15” in length, depending. One thing to mind: these don’t need the brightest light, but they don’t do well in low light either. I keep mine a few feet from a northwest window and they grow well.

Oh! If you go the coleus route, make sure you prune to keep a full plant. Just pinch off those top little tiny leaves when you water. I also think it’s useful to know what to avoid because those stores are full of gorgeous plants that will die if you don’t know what you’re doing. Stay away from maranta, calathea, alocasia, and cissus. If your home isn’t high humidity (think East coast without AC) avoid begonias until you have a couple plants under your belt. That said, begonia are hardier and easier than their reputation once you’re ready for them.
