research each species thoroughly to see how others care for it indoors, and how it behaves in the wild. information on a plant’s native environment is really helpful when you’re trying to replicate that indoors. research is key to happy healthy houseplants! we’re all always learning more, and even after keeping houseplants for so long i still feel “green” so to speak, there’s just so much i don’t know. i’ve learned from being on this forum that many beginners either 1. don’t give their plants enough light (right in a window is best for most, but again research to see the kind of light each species prefers) or 2. water on a strict schedule without checking the soil, or overwater their plants otherwise. not enough light also causes over watering symptoms. if you can avoid those pitfalls you should be able to keep your plants happy. all they need to grow is light, water, and some space and nutrients. that said, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, it’s how we learn! i’ve killed so many plants learning how to care for the ones i have now. i’ve even killed 2 this winter, one under watered and one that didn’t get enough light. as long as you pay attention to your plants (watch for pests and signs of stress or thirst) and research their species requirements i’m sure everything will be just fine 😊
