Hello all! I’m new and have never been able to keep plants very long. I really want to keep them alive and healthy. I have a couple of snake plants in a room with no sunlight pretty much. The bedroom light stays on most of the day, but it’s not a grow light. Should I get a grow light or just set my plants out during the day? The daily in and out can be tough for me as i forget.

They make inexpensive and convenient grow lights that you plug into outlets or USB, that hang off a wall or are on a stake in the planter. They can be set on timers, that mimic the change of day and night. There’s many options that sound like they could work for you. I’m newish too within the last couple years and was frustrated by my inability to keep them alive. I’m definitely still learning and making mistakes and asking for advice. When a plant doesn’t do well or dies it feels pretty sad. But I also try to think of it in terms of, say I go to a coffee shop and spend $15 on breakfast, or $15 on a plant or whatever the comparison for someone might be. Did I spend money on a plant that ultimately died? Yeah, and I’ve lost many.😆 but while it was alive, it taught me things, and it brought me joy. So now I just try to learn from it and then I go out and buy a new plant. 🪴 😆 I tried to start off with some pretty easy plants and a snake plant is a great one. Then I worked my way up to, OK now I’m going to try fertilizing and propagation. Next, I might tackle humidity, different forms of light, filtration, and/or different types of soil, etc. for me, I found that it was just easier that way.

I actually have a snake plant at my office that doesn’t get natural light. It’s probably not growing as well as it could but it’s fine! I did just get a snake plant for home and I haven’t figured out the best spot for it. I’d say to get a grow light. Or just see how it goes with it getting no light.

Get yourself a good grow light. I collect different snake plants and own over 60’of them. It is an outright shame that these are marketed as low light plants. They thrive in bright light. They can ‘survive’ in low light, but that just means they die a slow death. Give it well draining soil and only water when the soil (all of it) is completely dry (50% cactus soil and 50% inorganic material\grit). A grow light with timer would help it mimic its natural habitat and keep it in its natural rhythm. Guarantee it will help. An overhead bedroom light is not enough. A majority of my plants are straight grow light, and they grow better than those in an eastern window.

Thank yall so much! I’ve had these plants for about a year and a half in little to no light but do feel they could do better. There has been some growth from them, just very slow. I’ll get grow lights and terracotta has worked for me! Allows plants to breathe
