Hey there! I picked up this colocasia black ruffles at our local nursery the other week, and a new leaf is starting to emerge! I’m relatively new to keeping any plants other than cactus, so I’ve been doing some research about repotting and I’m getting conflicting information. I’ve read that elephant ears shouldn’t be in anything smaller than a 12” pot, but I’ve also read that you should only repot 2” above the current size, so if you were in my shoes, what would you do for this guy? I just feel this nursery pot is way too small for a plant this tall, but maybe it’s not? For reference it’s a 4” nursery pot, and my plant is probably just over a foot tall. Thanks for helping us out!

I think I would find a nice cover pot and keep it in the pot it has. A nursery is going to use a good soil and a grower’s pot has the best drainage. Any time you repot you run the risk of killing it or causing shock. The fact that it just produced a new leaf says it’s happy 😊

Thank you! I won’t pretend like repotting doesn’t intimidate me, so if I can avoid it for a while longer until my plant gets stronger, I will 😅 At what point would you size up pots?

I judge it by the size of the root ball and give it a couple inches around it. When it gets root bound the water will rush through the pot and that’s when it really needs it! 😁

I think by 12” pot they’re referring to a full grown plant

these are finicky too so you don’t want to repot while it’s working on a new leaf
