Should I propagate my 10 year old Christmas cactus in water or soil?
For a Christmas cactus like the one in the photo, you can propagate in either water or soil, and both work pretty well! • Water propagation: Just take a healthy cutting (about 2–3 segments), let the cut end dry for a day or two, then place it in a small glass with water covering just the bottom segment. Once you see roots (in a couple of weeks), you can transfer it to soil. • Soil propagation (many people prefer this for cacti/succulents): Let the cutting dry for a day or two, then stick it into slightly moist cactus/succulent potting mix. Keep the soil lightly moist (not soggy) and it should root within a few weeks. If you want an easier, lower-risk way, I’d recommend directly into soil — Christmas cacti are used to rooting that way!
