I purchased this plant early fall, because it was just so pretty sitting in the nursery, and I really wanted it for my collection. However, I didn’t know a thing about it, and when I researched it, the info said this plant goes into dormancy. I have no idea what this really means, and I’ve been waiting for my Hilo to do something, and so far, nothing! Although today, I noticed these two dark spots on each of two leaves, and I’m wondering what this is, maybe the beginning of dormancy, or something else like black spot? Does anybody know anything about this plant? If so, I’d really appreciate any info you have. TIA!

Hi Lynda, that brown spot is likely to do with watering, perhaps it received its last watering a bit too soon. I got my first caladiums last summer season and what I noticed when we started getting into autumn was that the leaves started to change colour, darkening. One of the caladiums ended up losing all of its leaves. And the other didn’t lose its leaves but they became very small. Nothing was happening to the plant that lost its leaves but I took it out of its pot, cleaned the bulb and then ended up putting it into a propagation box with some cuttings. I recently bought heat mats and the prop box is now on a heat mat. Now that we are half way through spring here, the caladium’s bulb is growing a new leaf! So all is good with the bulb that lost its leaves. They behave much like alocasias. The second caladium’s leaves are getting larger now as well, which is great to see. Hopefully they both return to last year’s glorious state when we reach summer. Best of luck with your baby! 🌿🌿🌿

Are you saying, that perhaps I shouldn’t get water on this plant’s leaves? Most often, I do rinse off my plants when I water them, just to get the dust off their leaves. Should I avoid doing this for this plant? Since you have two Caladiums, apparently some do go dormant, and some don’t… Is that correct? Sorry about all the ???s, but I appreciate your time in answering them. TIA!

PS. I do water my HILO almost every day, because when I use my moisture meter, it normally will say she’s just barely into dry. And I’ve heard they do not like to get dry. I’m afraid if she dries out, that will contribute to her dormancy. Comments? TIA!

Hi Lynda, from my understanding of dormancy, it’s more about the other environmental conditions - mostly temp that triggers it. I started to notice the changes to my caladiums when the night time temps started regularly dropping below around 16 degrees C (60 F). I specifically bought a Bluetooth hygrometer so that I could check how much the temps were dropping at night and see if that could explain what was happening to the caladiums and it did! I think give the leaves a wash shouldn’t cause the issue you are seeing, I suspect it’s too wet at the roots. I would let it dry out a little more before watering again. I hope all that made sense but please feel free to ask any questions, I’m very happy to keep chatting about this!

Sorry forgot to answer your other question about some going into dormancy and others not: I think these plants are like alocasias in that some are more sensitive to environmental triggers for dormancy than others. I have 3 alocasias and only 2 went into dormancy over winter while the other just kept growing as if nothing different was going on. My second caladium definitely slowed down in its growth significantly but perhaps for whatever reason the conditions were kept just right enough for it not to go into full dormancy and lose all its leaves.

TXS for your info! I really appreciated it! If you come up with any other comments about this plant, I’d love to have them. I do hope my Caladium doesn’t go into dormancy, because I like her just as she is… BEAUTIFUL!
