I repotted my bird of paradise at the beginning of last month and the health of it has significantly decreased. I’ve lost two leaves since this photo. I noticed the soil smelled bad today. What happened? What should I do?

Could you add a pic of the pot and soil?

Hard to tell when theres not a recent picture, but i can say the soil looks very dark and wet. Im not a fan of those self-watering bulbs for indoor plants, especially when the plant is in a plastic pot in a cool place. The leaves look droopy, though it might be that its trying to reach the light, that corner is too dark. Im not sure whats going on with the stalks, maybe someone whose more experienced with these kinds of plants can tell you

I like the decorations! It might be a combination of multiple things, but I think your soil may be too dense/water retentive. Did you mess with the root ball much when you repotted or just plop it in the new pot and fill in around it?

It was rather root bound, so I had to take a hammer to the ceramic pot I had it in previously. Once out, I did some cutting and hacking to the root ball to try to break it all up. It was almost 100% roots and no soil whatsoever.

I gotcha, it may be in shock from the repot then. I did the exact same thing you did when I repotted my BoP last September. It was very root bound so I really went to town trying to loosen it up and then repotted and it had an absolute freak out for several months until its roots filled in the new space.

If the soil smells bad you may have some root rot going on as well.

Thanks for weighing in with your expertise! I’ll check for root rot and hope and pray it’s just shock!

So when you repotted the plant, did you reuse the old soil? Tell me you didnt 😭

Absolutely not. Like I said up above⬆️, it barely had any soil because it was so root bound

Oh ok awesome! Im a little dramatic because i did that once. Huge mistake on my part. Your soil looks fine for a bird of paradise, honestly, but i do worry it doesnt drain well, especially if its in a plastic pot. A layer of gravel at the bottom helps alot with that, or just giving it more time between waterings. I do think the problem with your plant is something else though. Im not a fan of the placement of the plant at all. A few feet to the right would do alot better than the dark corner, i think. Otherwise… it is pest season. Check it for funal infections and tiny bugs. I wish you luck, its such a pretty plant!

Yep. It’s root rot. And fungus knats 😭 I just hacked all the rot off and I’m left with this. Does she have a fighting chance?

Yes she still does I would recommend putting her in water to grow new roots then transfer her to soil
