I’m about to go get some new soil for my plants, I learned the hard way that miracle grow is one of the worst types of soil for my plants🤦‍♀️. Does anyone have recommendations of brands or types of soil that can be found at Walmart?

Are you saying you want to avoid miracle grow brand all together? Or just saying miracle grow all purpose potting soil? People say miracle grow for both interchangeably sometimes.

The all purpose stuff is what I used, and it stays way too moist

So I would like to avoid any soil from the brand

I’ve been happy with Espona’s Organic Cactus and Succulent mix, but I can’t say I’ve tried their other mixes. I know they have quite a few different ones. You can find them at Ace Hardware or Walmart

Gotcha! Looks like you have gotten some good recommendations! I use “miracle grow cactus, tropical, citrus” for my succulents and “miracle grow performance garden potting soil” for my container garden of food plants. I don’t use the all purpose potting soil for anything. I also mix in perlite, vermiculite, wood chips, and home grown compost as needed. I would use miracle grow all purpose for petunias outside or something like that, but otherwise, it’s not good for most of my plants.

I’d probably try to get something that looks well draining along with some additives like perlite and orchid bark

Okay, thank you, I do have orchid bark already and I like to mix it into my soil for extra drainage

Perfect! Yeah I’d pick up the other two then and you got yourself a better soil than miracle grow

I’ve never used orchid bark before. Does it add drainage and air space like perlite or howl moisture like vermiculite? I love branching out on my soil additive options!

Yeah! I’d say it gives air space like perlite, but more chunkier for those plants that need more oxygen to the roots and that tend to be overwatered by new growers. I use it still because it looks pretty, helps dry out the soil for my indoor plants faster and is a cheaper additive that goes farther than perlite alone :)

Foxfarm is great, but is also too dense right out the bag. It needs extra perlite (chunky perlite specifically), small orchid bark or coco husk to help with drainage.

I’d recommend this soil! It’s a more expensive than miracle gro but it has never failed me for my indoor plants and I’ve had it for 6 months and barely made a dent in it!

I’ve had nothing but good luck with the Miracle Grow moisture control potting mix. I used to use the yellow bag and wasn’t too impressed with it.

That’s the key I think, figuring out what kind you need. The blue bag is great for outdoor plants that require normal amounts of water but are being grown in hot dry climates. I grew petunias in it years ago in the 100+ drought conditions TX summer. I think I might have grown flowers that were on our outdoor irrigation line in the yellow bag because I just needed basic soil. I grow all my food crops in the black bag soil because it is amazing! I do reuse soil year after year though so I eventually amend it with homemade compost and of course add fertilizer. Almost all my succulents are in the orange bag soil. I haven’t bought any new in a couple years and just add perlite and wood chips if I feel like it’s not as well draining as it used to be. A lot of times watering too often, having too big of a pot, the wrong kind of soil, or not enough air flow is what leads to problems rather than the brand of soil. But I know a lot of people don’t like miracle grow so I respect that opinion and am glad there are other options. I used to use eco scraps for food plants, but they disappeared so I found the black bag of miracle grow. At least I know the big guys won’t disappear on me.🤪

I use miracle grow potting mix but add orchid bark and perlite to made it chunkier and more draining

Just remember, you can’t use one kind of soil for different kinds of plants. Carnivorous plants are going to need vastly different soils than cactuses or tomatoes. There is no one size fits all potting soil. Planta gives a description on the plant info pages of what kind of soils each plant likes. Hopefully that will help you narrow down what you need.😊

if you still have the miracle gro left over, i think it would be okay to mix it with perlite and other drainage-encouraging materials or even a 1:2 all-purpose:cactus/succulent soil. i do it with most of my indoor plants. that with perlite. depending on the plant of course, as others have said. i had a little tropical mix so i mixed that in for some of my tropical plants too. as long as there’s good drainage it’s hard to go terribly wrong with most plants
