I wanted to update you on my Birkin Philo. Recently, I showed you pictures of her with two white leaves; now she has THREE of them, and they are just gorgeous! I’m noticing that these white leaves are turning a bit more green as they age, with some light green lines in them as they get older. I know white leaves do not photosynthesize, so are these new leaves going to be problematic for my plant? Is this unusual for a Birkin to throw this many white leaves? TIA!

No, it’s fine! If it’s doing that it means it’s getting enough light to support those leaves.

When they have the small amount of Green they can photosynthesis, and shouldn't be an issue

It’s definitely striking, isn’t it? I don’t know, though, if white leaves are common to this plant; if so, how many leaves of this color are considered normal? TIA to whomever can answer these questions!

Beautiful plant and on my wish list. Try silica supplement to help the white leaves stay looking good.

Funny you mention that, because I’m using ARMOR SI by General hydroponics; it was recommended by another Planta member! I had never heard of it before, and still don’t really understand exactly what it is, but it was for my TINEKE rubber plants; they have white on their leaves, which I’m sure you know. I generally put it in my watering can, along with the fertilizer and fungus gnat stuff… and a systemic pesticide made by SNS, (a natural and safe pesticide to use.) If you care to tutor me on silica products, I’d love to know more about them. If so, then TIA!

Lynda sounds like you are doing fine. Probably more knowledgeable than me. Just FYI, I started using silica supplements when my philodendron white knight was having its beautiful white variegation turning brown way too soon. It made a huge improvement. I dose when I fertilize. I’m still not sure how it works but it does. I use it for all my plants now.

TXS for your comments! It’s too bad there’s not a learners manual where we could put hot tips, including something like silica, for newbies to Planta. I know I have felt like a hunter/gatherer trying to find these helpful hints that are so useful to my plants. Why can’t these suggestions be put in one place for everyone to see, and use? Hmmmm, any idea…💡?!
