Part of me really wants to chop the top part and root it in an effort to start a new, less leggy plant. Is this a bad idea? Should I let her be?

She looks beautiful as is but I can totally see how you’d want to make her fuller. I say if you want to chop then do it, the plant will grow regardless especially if it’s that happy. Plus most planty YouTubers that have chopped plants shared that it was the best decision and actually made their plant grow faster. PS love the couch in the background lol, I’m looking for a new one so that’s all I’m seeing everywhere 😄

Appreciate your thoughtful advice and kind words, Alyssa! Re: the couch — it’s from Interior Define, they have a lot of great customizable options in terms of size, layout, fabric, etc. They might have 4th of July discounts coming up, so check them out!

Of course! I think you’ll be set especially since the growing season is just starting. Oh perfect! Thank you so so much for sharing that, I’ll look into them for sure!

I have this exact plant and I’m also wondering about chopping the top to make it bushier .. it’s nerve wracking

Personally I love how it looks as is. It’s beautiful! I’m just curious how long it took to grow? How many leaves did it have when you got it? What light does it get?

Thank you!! I got her in April 2023 as a 2-leaf top cutting and had her rooting in water for a couple of months before transferring her to a tropical soil mix. She sits by a SW-facing window, and I added a grow light during the winter months.

I just tagged the plant profile on my original post so you can see her growth progress over the past year.

I was just thinking there’s no way it grew that much in two months, but then I remembered this year is 2024 😂🤦 Still impressive!

So monstera albo are always going to have a longer spacing between leaves. Especially if you compare it to a Thai constellation. But the bigger the leaves get, the less leggy it looks, in my opinion When I chop plants that are rooted into a pole, I like to cut near the bottom. So that gives you a section of plant attached to the pole as well as a rooted section still in the pot. Then I remove that pole and put a new one in the pot for the future growth to attach to. With the top part of the plant, you can pot it up as is and let it keep doing its thing, or you can take it off the pole. Removing a plant from a pole is fairly tedious and delicate work. But then you can cut between nodes, and voila you have several well rooted albo propagations ready to push out new growth points! I find that monstera cuttings that have no roots take forever to start growing again, so this method totally kickstarts propagation by ensuring each cut section already has a root system
