My ginseng ficus’s roots grew out of its pot again! I’ve had to repot it 3 times in the past year becuase of this and I always put 2 inches or more of soil underneath the roots at the bottom of the pot. It’s not even growing out of its pot it’s just growing down and I don’t know why. Other than that the plant is doing amazing I would just like to know if anyone has experienced this and knows how to stop it. I’ve also attached a photo of the soil I use if it is the reason it does this. Btw the photo of the plant is 2 months of root growth.

it wouldn’t hurt if you trimmed the roots off a little bit :) if you cut about 2 inches off if you’re comfortable with that and put it in a pot it will start focusing on root development and establishment instead of growing towards the plant itself. what a happy plant!!! so beautiful

Thank you so much for the help! I’ll trim the roots the next (hopefully never) times this happens

The reason it does that is that it's a tree that absolutely will get tree-sized if you allow it. To keep it as a miniature, you have to regularly prune both the branches and the roots. Look up bonsai root pruning for how to train it while being gentle on the plant. Also with your first root trim, transfer it to a tighter fitting shallow pot; giving it too much extra space encourages it to get bigger. At first you may need to trim the roots fairly often, but as you train it, it'll slow down and eventually only need it every other year or less often
