Can someone explain edema to me? Assuming it is when plants are watered too frequently? I wait until mine are mostly dry then run water through the soil long enough that I know it’s totally saturated. I thought you couldn’t overwater by soaking it…right??

I’m not exactly sure for an answer to your question but I water mine the same. I’ve recently learned that some soils and some pots do not allow the roots to breath or have any air flow and I’ve nearly killed a couple of my plants. They both had the soil that I bought them with, here’s a picture of the pot that I had trouble with. A plastic inner pot and I decorative outer but it didn’t allow any air flow. I barely watered these plants and waited until it felt completely dry but I didn’t realize water at the bottom remained

Edema is excess water in the cells that are not released by the normal process of transpiration. Transpiration is release of water vapors through the leaves. Several things can cause edema. Overwatering. Roots can intake too much water faster than the plant can release the water vapors. High humidity can block the release of water vapors. Poor air circulation around the plant can slow transpiration and keep humidity high. Preventative measures are getting good airflow with fans. Avoid overwatering. Control and track the humidity levels. Plants too close together can slow airflow and increase humidity. Get good lighting for the plants to increase photosynthesis. 🪴🍀
