I just brought this Schlumbergera truncata home today. It was wrapped in a holiday foil and well watered before being shipped to the store I purchased it from. It's not so wet I can squeeze water from the soil. It has a faint smell (evergreen tree but I assume it's just musty from the foil). I plan on putting a small fan near it to help dry it out a bit. I see no evidence of fungus or gnats, etc. Everything say not to repot until the blooms are spent but I'd really like to. Should I wait or just do it? It's in a seed starting mix and my other is loving an epiphytic mix.

I'd wait. That's going to be a fantastic bloom and it'd be tragic to interrupt it. Do pay attention to the smell though, if it gets better you're good to wait, if it worsens, then prioritize root health

Thanks! It's already smelling better this morning after having the fan in it all night. I can't wait to see it bloom. A few at the store were already opening and the flowers were a mix of white, pale pink, and two tone white/pink!

Perhaps a gentle watering with a diluted hydrogen peroxide?

I've never used peroxide. I'll try it

Agreed. Hydrogen peroxide naturally breaks down into water and oxygen when exposed to natural light, though, so I don’t think you’ll need to dilute it with water when it’ll naturally turn into that. Peroxide’s great for fungal infections and root rot for plants 👍 And I agree on waiting before repotting, not just because of the blooms, but because this type of cacti is much more prone to shock from repotting, so I’d wait for it to acclimate to the new environment and once it’s done blooming. If you’ve never had to repot one of these before, try not to remove a lot of the soil. Once roots start getting exposed from removing the soil, cover the roots in Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder, and replace the soil you removed with the epiphytic mix you mentioned. As tempting as you might want to remove the current mix, I’ve learned the hard way that these guys love literally detaching themselves from their entire root system out of shock if you fool with their roots during a repot. Replacing some of the soil and letting it dry out as much as possible between waterings should help reduce the risk of overwatering or root rot from the current soil mix. Hope this helps! 😊

Don’t repot it. If you want to dress it up a bit, pop it into a decorative container.

Well, doing great without a repot.
