Hello All, I have a question concerning my arrowhead. It is doing fairly well although I need to treat it better. 🫣. Apparently it is a very thirsty plant requiring water 2x/week and sensitive to lime. I will step up my game! So, I have roots or leaves growing mid stem. I am thinking roots and I need to break it off and plant. Please advise? Thank you so much!

those are roots, but they are supposed to be there. syngonium / arrowheads are climbers, and naturally try to attach to things to get further up. giving them a pole or stake to climb will reward you with bigger leaves! and yes, she definitely looks thirsty.

the leaves are curling and beginning to brown. i do not personally own any syngonium, so i'm not sure, but maybe some extra humidity would help? a humidifier is ideal, but misting can also assist.

I would trim off any majority brown leaves as this doesn’t help the plant anymore. Make sure there is no water sitting at the bottom of the pot. If the top two inches seem dry, check the bottom to make sure as well. Use a stick of some sort to do the “cake” test if there’s any mud or wetness, let it be. Besides that make sure you got humidity and some nice indirect light :))

Also, can you advise stake size (thickness, width) and where I should put it. I am thinking center to capture current roots but…

you should get either a plank such as a 2x4 or a plastic pole about 2 inches in diameter. height is up to you. put it where the stem is leaning so that the plant recognizes the support and begins to attach to it.

And with a stake size, keep it to about the height of your plant, there’s attachable moss poles and stakes to add on if it gets taller. Keep your plant in the center, pole or stake near back of pot. Use Velcro tape to gently secure your plant to this stake or pole and over time it should do the rest! It’ll grab on to what it can. Moss poles would provide more nutrients by allowing these “air roots” to turn into actual roots in the moss or soil and add many benefits to your plant. BUT, if you use a moss pole make sure the moss is consistent moist, not drenched:)

A syngonium that size shouldn’t need watering twice a week in a pot that size with that much soil. I suspect the clay pot is drawing the water away. Clay pots can be great if you know how to use them. I avoid them and stick to plastic pots. It’s easier for me to control the water in my plants’ soil in a plastic pot. The dry leaf edge could be from overwatering that turned dry or under watering causing dehydration. The third thing that could be happening is the pot is too large. I would reduce the pot size by a third. Excess soil can cause root rot. My overall recommendation is to switch to a smaller pot, preferably plastic. You can use a clay outer pot for aesthetics and to weigh down plant. Let the soil dry out between waterings. Syngoniums can grow with or without staking. It’s a personal preference. I have many just freely growing in big pots. Others are clipped to a single bamboo stake for height. My Syngonium Albo Variegated plants just overflow from tiny 4” and 3” pots. My white butterfly syngoniums are in wide hanging baskets with no staking.
