Ugh 😩 did I mess up again? I bought this lipstick plant on Sunday on a road trip home. I put it in my laundry room (one window). Yesterday I repotted it into a hanging planter for the purposes of hanging in my bathroom in front of the window. The pot it came in and the pot I planted it in, were roughly the same size, slightly different taper on top. Needless to say I did have to smoosh it in there a teensy bit. It was already very wet so I did not water it except for just trying to clean off the pot. I wake up this morning and half of its leaves are black and curly. I tipped it over, no water ran out. I tried to dab at the soil with tissues, but it didn’t soak up any water. Removed any leaves that were 80% black. Please tell me I haven’t murdered my brand new plant. I added photos of the before, the leaves, after, and then after I removed all the leaves.

It might be freaking out from all that changes, typically I wait a few weeks before repotting a new plant. It needs time to adjust to its new environment, I think it will live just let it settle in

Well, maybe I will have to choose my replanting timeframe more carefully next time

Couuld be shock/ stress - what did her roots look like when you took her out of the first pot?

I mean, I’m not an expert, but they looked fine

It looks sunburnt, possibly from the road trip while exposed to direct sunlight or it went through temperature extremes. Sun scorching, extreme temperatures or chemical poisoning are the only things I know that can quickly kill a plant. I’m assuming no toxic chemicals were added. So, cut off the black leaves. Leave other ones with the most green areas for photosynthesis. You can cut off the remaining damaged leaves when new leaves replace them.

Yeah I cut off what felt like LOTS and left a few that were half and half and obviously all the healthy leaves. I definitely didn’t add anything. Temperature is the only thing I’m not entirely sure about, but the weather was the same the whole way.

I agree with Ash, probably just the shock of all the changes. I typically wait a few weeks as well before making any changes to my new plants. Sometimes depending on how well they're doing, I might leave them for months before repotting or anything else so I don't create anymore stress on them. Hopefully your plant just needs some sun and rest before it bounces back. Good luck!

I hope so. It dropped more leaves. I wasn’t even thinking about it because it was about the same size as the nursery pot. I really don’t want it to die.
