Wanted to start a thread where everyone could share their favorite nurseries and shops to buy their houseplants from. For me, my top two are Ott’s Exotic Plants in Schwenksville, PA, and The Rhoads Garden in North Wales, PA. I highly recommend checking either out if you’re ever in the area. Here’s some photos I’ve taken over the years at Ott’s. Feel free to share your favorite online shops/nurseries greenhouses or Etsy sellers as well if you get more of your plants online, or non-plant-exclusive shops one might not think to check out for plants. TIA! For anyone interested in checking Ott’s out, they are a VERY large nursery. They sell houseplant supplies, soil, pots, seeds, etc. as well, but most people come for their houseplants or mums. Each room has a different selection of houseplants to choose from, including: - a room for peperomias, hoyas, lipstick and goldfish plants, begonias, African violets, and terrarium starter plants - a room for pothos, philodendrons, spider plants, monsteras, and pretty much every other tropical plant you can think of - a front entrance with a seasonal banana plant where you can buy the bananas or banana plants from them. - a koi pond and waterfall, with a staircase that takes you to the top of the nursery so you can look down at their jungle - a long back room stocked with everything from flowers to herbs and vegetables, cacti and succulents (10-15 foot cacti included), bonsai, and very fragrant fruit trees. - stray cats that love to sunbathe on the tables and follow customers around. They’re very sweet, and take lots of cat naps as you walk around.

This is Ott’s state-famous Mum Mountain. They often have flowers planted on their mountain in the spring as well, but lots of locals flock to see it in the fall. They even made a snowman out of cabbages last November after Mum Mountain’s blooms were all done for the season. There’s a short tunnel you can travel through the center, and stairs to “climb” the mountain. Just a fun thing to see in the fall 🍁

And here’s some photos from The Rhoads Garden. While it’s not as extravagant as Ott’s, they have a lovely bonsai section, a gift shop with lots of really nice jewelry and gifts (and plants) for anyone during the holiday season, and the flowers in their nursery smell amazing. I can’t describe how intense and sweet the scent when you enter that part of their building is some days. It’s really lovely. They also tend to have quite a few unique houseplants in rotation throughout the year, and I’ve found a lot of lovely hidden gems in there, including very hard to find peperomias (particularly a Peperomia Maculosa, which smells and tastes like cilantro), lots of little Hoyas and starter plants for terrariums around $3-5 year-round, an adorable succulent section, and the black pagoda lipstick plant pictured above 😊 They’re a surprisingly affordable option if you wanna try a small starter of a cool new plant. They and Ott’s are also my go-to places to get my favorite brands of soil, insecticidal soaps, and a large selection of lovely pots to choose from. Highly recommend if you’re like me and have to hunt for Espoma brand soil.

And as for online sellers, on Etsy I’d recommend: - Stem Em (Based in New York) - TheGreenEscape (Based in Florida) - SkyGardenByPhoenix (Based in California) - WinterGreenhouse (Based in Wisconsin. They also have their own website where I bought a gorgeous bunch of Nematanthus ‘Shady Lady Mae’ from, and I cannot recommend getting that plant from them enough. It’s a gorgeous, pet-friendly plant. The photos attached are of that plant) - Amerikaktus (based in California) - JaquelineHomeGarden (based in California)

I suggest visiting plant shows. They have really interesting varieties and things you just don't see stocked very often. Also visit an orchid show even if you don't want to grow them; the flowers are fantastic

I’ll have to check one out! Thanks for the tip! Do you have any specific plant shows you’d recommend trying out? 😃

I've only been to the kentucky plant show, which was great. As for orchid shows, any orchid society in association with AOS is going to have great stuff for sale along with display specimens that get judged
