a few things you can look for: lots of roots coming out of the bottom — not just the few that reach for water, but like spaghetti roots. sometimes the roots will gather at the bottom in a thick layer and start pushing your plant up out of the pot if you’re doing everything “right” and still seeing slow growth or leaf drop, that can also be a sign

Roots fill up 50% or more of the pot. Water runs right through when watering. Roots look like a cup o noodles. Roots start growing out the top of the pot. Any of these could mean it’s time for an up size. My Thai con that I kept forgetting to repot 😅

When you repot your Thai con, will you like break up the roots and try to get rid of the old soil? Or repot like it is in a new pot and fill in with new soil?

As a general rule, I don’t mess with the roots when I repot to keep transplant shock to a minimum. The Thai con root ball was SOLID, so it would cause more stress than it’s worth. I simply place in the new pot as-is, and let the plants do their thing. I repot about a month ago and it just put out a new leaf that’s hardening off.

If the plant is drying out super quickly, that’s a sign that it’s root bound. Here’s one of mine recently that was drying out every 2 days - needed a bigger pot!
