What steps do yall take for pest control I haven’t really seen any pest but I’ve seen soo many people have problems with pests and it seems like a pain. Any tips to avoid them or how do yall normally check for them.

I’ve had most pest issues with my plants when they are indoors and with the newly purchased plants. My routine is the carefully check for pests when the plants arrive through the mail. The photo shows a Hoya Mathilde that arrived with 2 tiny mealybugs. The plant was in a 1 inch pot. Dabbing with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol killed them. So, it’s important to meticulously check all over the plants and pots when they are brought home and about once a month.

Hi! So, first, I know Etsy has some amazing plants but also there’s so many duds and terrible stories I’ve heard from buying plants on there; headaches that I would rather avoid lol. I either buy my plants from a nursery where I can have multiple options of the plant I’m looking for and meticulously look it over, orrr I buy plants from online plant shops that offer customer service and money back guarantees about no pests on their plants. Then when I get any plant, I immediately wash off or wipe off (depending on the plant) all the leaves and stems; this also allows me to get up close and personal with the plant and see how healthy it is and if there are any bugs I missed. I also usually repot it in my own soil mix right when I get it or within the week if I need to get a pot (I love repotting it so I can take a look at the roots and see how they are doing, it’s almost like the plant’s doctor check up lol). Additionally, I try to wash/wipe off the leaves with every watering, since I’m lugging the plant around anyways and am investing my time to water it I might as well do the cleaning at the same time. Clean leaves are healthy leaves and usually they don’t attract pests as much as dusty, dirt covered leaves. Finally, I make sure to use good dry soil, miracle grow and the like are usually ridden with pest eggs due to the way they store the bags before selling them (if you’ve ever opened up a bag of miracle grow you know the feeling of the gross dampness when you plunge your hand in lol).

I use systemic insecticide for prevention, you basically sprinkle these little pellets into the soil before watering and it helps the plant fight off pests

Systemic for thrips and mealys and I wipe my leaves down with a rubbing alcohol, dawn dish soap and water mixture along with Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew maybe every 6 weeks or so unless the humidity really drops and gets dry, I will spray them more frequently

A nice smelling preventative on your plants. Sprinkle cinnamon on top of the soil. The bugs hate it and it smells great.

I’ve had some gnats and I bought neem oil & lavender oil to help. I do a couple drops of each in my water for watering & misting and it’s helped a lot already! It’s only been a few days but the gnats are gone from all my plants except for one. When I water/spray I see them running or flying away. Neem oil is good for plants and bugs hate the smell of both neem & lavender! Lavender oil does attract bees & butterflies but all the lame bugs don’t like it 😎
