Hi! New to plants. Any recommendations for beginners? I live in a 4 season state. I’d prefer indoor plants. Excited to be part of the community! All advice appreciated.

A list of beginner indoor plants: spider plants, snake plants, pothos, rubber trees, philodendrons, zz plant, aloe vera, English ivy, Christmas cactus, Lucky bamboo My advice would be to keep up with your tasks on planta and start with just a few plants so you don’t get overwhelmed. If your house is drafty or cold in the winter I would look for hardier plants that can tolerate some drafts like snake plants and zz plants

My house gets extremely hot and dry. I was leaning towards a spider plant. I have a dog. I saw it has no toxicity to them. I appreciate your suggestions. 😊

A philodendron micans would be a great choice! They’re super easy and grow really fast. Tradescantia grow nicely and are easy to propagate as well. Syngoniums are nice too since they can be grown in just water which would help with pests. :)

Are they non toxic to pets?

None of those are unfortunately but for pet safe options you can always go with Hoyas, they grow a bit slower but are amazing when they bloom and some have different smells like cinnamon or chocolate. I had a Chinese money plant as one of my first plants which grew pretty fast and is pet safe also! (Peperomia, lipstick plant, goldfish plant, christmas/thanksgiving cactus are some good ones too that flower)

I recommend ficus benjamina for indoors. It's very versatile. it can get big, or be trimmed to stay small, or be trained as a bonsai. It can handle a wide range of lighting conditions. It can be restarted or propagated very easily by cuttings. It's just a happy camper that'll really help you out while you learn the basics of plant care

      Is it toxic to pets?

It's mildly toxic. The sap is an irritant that can bother their skin or make them sick if they eat it, but it's not life threatening. With mildly toxic plants, it's best to know your pet and if they tend to be a plant nibbler or not. For an easy species that's very pet safe, try fittonia. Also called nerve plant, it likes frequent watering

Of the listed so far, a few I would be cautious about with pets, they would definitely cause some indejestion issues, not fatal, but definitely undesirable issues. When I had cats, I made sure my plants were out of their reach, luckily they weren't climbers and I was able to keep them away. So, if you can't truly separate, a few pet friendly ones would be, spider plant, ferns - boston or birds nest, pileas, some hoyas.

Wow 😮. Thank you for the information. Spider plant is what I’m eyeing. Not sure 🤔 if Amazon sells those.
