Thought I’d share something fun I’ve been doing lately in hopes it inspires anyone else with a few too many plants on their hands. I know plant swaps and even rare plant conventions are a thing now, but for anyone looking to give some of their plants away, but don’t have many friends or family as into keeping them as much as you are, I highly recommend gifting them to your local nursing and retirement homes. I’m sure plenty of the folks that move into the ones around you are like mine and used to garden or keep houseplants. Some homes even have gardening clubs for the residents. I thought I might make some folks feel a little less homesick if they had something small to take care of and brighten up their new spaces. I’ve met quite a few very sweet ladies who thanked me when I dropped them off, telling me all about all the succulents they used to have in their homes, or the beautiful gardens they miss tending to. I’m preparing my third batch of plants for them and I’m happy to report that every time I go to gift some, I get another dozen people asking me if I can come back and bring more. I run out of plants very quickly there. For anyone interested in trying this, I highly recommend picking low-maintenance plants, like succulents, or ones that thrive on neglect like snake plants and ZZ plants. I make them “care cards” where I tell them how much light they need, how long I wait before watering them, how to check if the soil is dry to water, what type of soil they need, etc. using the information this app provides really comes in handy for that. I hope this inspires someone else to give some away where we might not normally think to look to gift them. You never know how much a small gift can mean to someone 😊

Here’s an example of the “care cards” I make. Another little tip: if you’re like me and try to rescue the mixed succulent arrangements at Lowe’s and Home Depot, and repot them so you have a bunch of succulents for cheap, that’s a great way to both save a plant from the box stores and acquire a bunch of plants to gift to friends and family. I’m always sad to see the clearance section of the Lowe’s garden center, but sometimes if you’re lucky, you can spot a batch of succulents in them that are still in good shape, and just need to be saved from that store 😊 I’ve done this a few times after running out of my first batch of plants and being asked if I could bring more in, and you can get about 10-15 succulents in one mixed planter for $20-$30 if you comb over them well enough, and under $15 if you’re willing to rehab something from the clearance section.

Thanks! ☺️ My grandmother was really into gardening and making floral arrangements when she lived with us. I figured there’s plenty of other folks like her that would probably like something familiar to keep them busy or feel less homesick. She’s why I got into working with houseplants in the first place 🌱 I’m really happy with the positive feedback I’ve received from the residents, and I figured there’s plenty of other folks that don’t know what to do with some of their plants, so I just thought I’d share what I’ve been doing if anyone else would try to give some of theirs away. The ladies at my great-aunt’s place have been very sweet to her since she moved in, so I wanted to thank them in some way too.

My grandmother LOVED her plants. I murdered them until fairly recently. I can still hear her say…. Ginger, plants need water ya know. But I’ve become obsessed with them now. My daughter in law says I’m empty nesting! Ha. When I get enough of them I might try this.

Happy to hear it! 😊 My grandmother gave my mother a cutting from her 60+ year-old jade when she bought her first home. That cutting’s turning 30 now, and I was put in charge of its care a few years back. One plant turned into 30, then the current 60 😬 15-20 of which I’m planning on giving away this week, though. Here’s a photo of my grandmother’s jade. I really hope to grow one of mine this big someday, and give cuttings of it away like she did.

They’re awesome! Definitely one of my favorite plants. I like getting mine from my local nurseries if I can, but I found this really beautiful one for $10 at my Giant of all places 😊
