I’m trying to start a vegetable garden at home. I have roma tomatoe seedlings along with lettuce and radish seeds planted but I’m not getting any shoots. Any tips or tricks on getting germination going faster. I also have herb starters basil, green onion, rosemary, oregano, sage and a sad cilantro plant that seems to have given up on me.
Where do you live? It will need to be a lot farther south than me (zone 5) to have luck with those plants outdoors this time of year. When I lived in zone 8, July was a no grow time because it was too hot. My plants couldn’t set blooms. Then they would come back with a vengeance in August. This time of year, make sure you water thoroughly, even that rosemary. Basil, cilantro, and sprouting seeds will probably need to be watered twice a day with the heat.
4 likes I live in Hawaii so we have humidity and heat in abdunance but no extreme cold. I just transplanted my herb starters a week after getting them. My seedlings I water twice and keep in partial shade so I don’t burn them but I’m wondering if I need to get some grow lamps to help with growth?

I second what KatieMomma said... If I hope for a good harvest, I have to start seeds indoors by mid-april. 😳 For germination tips though, consider humidity domes over the sprouting trays! I have incredibly higher germination rates when using humidity domes. However, I only do this indoors where I can monitor water levels. With the dome and the indoor factor, I often don't have to water more than once before I see seedlings sprouting up!
2 likesYou may want to start your seeds indoors to prevent the baby seedlings from roasting. As soon as they're old enough to harden off, you can take them outside and use shade cloth to ease them into the heat. For the tomato seedlings, bury the stems pretty deep to give them a better root system. Water everything often; depending on how hot it is where you are, you might even do twice a day on the hottest days.
