My poor Christmas cactus is desperately trying to tell me something, but our wires seem to always be crossed. It's a section from my grandmother's plant, so I'm quite attached to it, but even when following all the instructions and schedules on the app, this girl just isn't happy. I'm afraid I'm going to lose it... It's in a north facing window, but above the window itself, so it isn't getting direct light...

Maybe more light? You could chop and prop🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm trying to prop the segments that fall off, but it's early days yet... I could try moving it to be in front of the window w/ a grow light... See if that helps...

From the way it is pale green and long like that, I think more light would help a lot. When was that last time you repotted and fertilized?

It was last fertilized at the end of last September, and repotted (I was trying to grow it in leca, but moved it back to soil) in mid October.

Did it look like this before repotting?

It's gotten worse, unfortunately... I put it under a grow light and in the window today....

It sounds like you've done too much change too quickly. Plants are about the long care plan and small adjustments. Big adjustments like changing soil, soil type, and sometimes fertilizing (depending on the dose) should be done once a year max with small improvements made on a consistent scale to support. I'm not sure how long you were trying to do the semi-hydro medium, but the roots a plant uses in water are different than the roots used in dirt. The adjustment process between the two is also very long and will often lead to plant shock. Try to think of it as a fish that needs time to develop its air breathing lungs in a dry surface environment. I wouldn't change anything else save light to help give it the energy to create those new roots

If you feel it needs any fertilizer, try B12. It's a very gentle fertilizer made from fish oil that is made to be easy on new roots. I would expect to see improvement come spring. With the fertilizing in September, changing the soil type in October and having it be winter now, I think it's still looking rather good having all those factors. Just be patient and keep a picture record to watch for progress, she'll come back around!
