I want to switch my Alocasia Polly over to leca. I read somewhere to let the roots adjust in just water before changing over. Do I just plop this whole thing into water, or will that likely kill it?

I would let them adjust, Alocasia are known for being very finicky

0 Mi piaceI would do some research on your specific type of alocasia honestly, I only have a baby fredryk but every thing I’ve seen on here with other alocasia parents is ghat they are difficult plants, sorry I couldn’t offer more information, possibly somebody with more information pops up in the comments

Also, the root can’t touch the water until they reach by themselves. Lastly, you will need to supplement as leca is inert. Personally, I’ve never added to water before putting in semi hydro as water roots and semi hydro are still different from each other.

I decided to transfer them anyway, and just waited a while before flushing the pots really thoroughly and refilling with nutrient solution. I have had two that I've had to actually remove from the media and re-clean once the dirty parts of the roots sloughed off. I had to clean the media too. It was a pain but the plants seem fine, though they're a bit mad about being disturbed.
1 mi piaceHi, I have 4 alocasia and have found that none of them needed a period of being in water first before transitioning to LECA. Wash as much soil/organic matter from the potting mix off the roots. I have mine in self watering pots with a wick and they seem very happy. The roots eventually grow out the bottom of the pots and find the nutrient solution too, so clever :)
