Hello 👋🏾 everyone I just got a clipping of a fiddle leaf fig from a friend today and she said to plant it right away so I did, my question is do you think the pot is too big? Should I repot in something smaller? She also gave me a huge monstera clipping Thank you Planta community for your advice ❤️🌱🌿🌼

So pot size should always be determined by root size instead of plant size. Usually you don’t want to pot more than 1-2” bigger than the root ball or it will lead to overwatering/uneven watering issues (the soil will hold more water than the roots can handle, etc.) If it doesn’t have roots yet, I think it’s still a good idea to size down until it is established and eventually needs a repot. I also don’t know much about fiddle leafs specifically except that they’re very finicky…good luck!

It doesn’t have any roots, should I put them both in water until roots are established? 🤔 Thank you everyone for your advice 🙏🏽

Hey, just a heads up, it actually can and will lead to watering issues

I’ve also always heard to only use a pot 1-2” larger than the root ball. You could put it in a small nursery pot and use the bigger pot as a “cover” pot

To answer your other question, it’s probably not a bad idea to let the cuttings root in water. Many people prefer this

Jealous! I’m a bit “loose” when it comes to pot sizes but haven’t learned my lesson yet! Just don’t go crazy big??
