Iā€™m sorryā€¦I feel like I am bugging everyone with all my questions yet, I have another oneā€¦sorryā€¦ I have a Monstera that has huge aerial roots. Iā€™ve heard to put the end of them back in the dirt, Iā€™ve heard to put the ends in water, Iā€™ve heard to cut them off to get more leaves to grow, and Iā€™ve heard to just leave them alone. my Monstera is out of control, because I did not know when I got her that she is a climberā€¦now sheā€™s a wanderer. I put the pool noodle on the edge of the pot so it wouldnā€™t make marks in her stem. So what do I do with the aerial roots and how do I get her to start climbing without hurting her massive stems? Iā€™m scared to propagate her because Iā€™m just a beginner at this. She seems happy. I just donā€™t want her to die. Sheā€™s my favorite plant!

    I would suggest getting a trellis (I find them easier than moss poles) get the plant Velcro and attach the thicker stems to the trellis not super tight but enough to ā€œtrainā€ it to start climbing . The aerial roots usually are searching for water sources in the wild but I usually just stick them back into the soil. I know some people add a cup with water to put the end of the aerial roots .

    Mine is a bit like yours - I have a moss pole and a bunch of plant Velcro and itā€™s starting to grow up instead of out. I also dampen the moss pole and the aerial roots tend to move towards it though I have heard itā€™s ok to cut them. Iā€™m not 100% sure on this though!

    I have 8 of this particular monstera type (half albo half the classic green) and all are growing well, but with varied support setups. So I can tell you from experience that a lot of different things can work. Iā€™m gonna start with some general helpful info so you have a foundation and then get into what Iā€™d do. The most important thing to recognize is that monstera have a front side and a back side. The back is the side the roots come out of. Generally the leaves will face the opposite way, but not always, so go off of the roots. So step one is gonna be to look at all the plants in the pot and make sure the backs of the plants are all facing the same direction. If theyā€™re facing different directions then youā€™re gonna need to re-orient some of them via repotting or rearranging in the same pot. Once theyā€™re facing the same way, choose a support. In the wild, monstera donā€™t have anyone tying them to trees to help them climb; they use those aerial roots to grab onto the tree. If you want the big, fenestrated leaves then give them something sturdy: a moss pole, a thick branch, a plank of wood. A wood trellis also works but the leaves donā€™t size up as fast. The existing aerial roots wonā€™t grab, but future ones will. Once 2-3 grab on itā€™ll climb on its own.

      If you really donā€™t want to chop, then Iā€™d probably get a trellis or a couple wood planks, pot them into the soil against the back of the pot so theyā€™re sturdy, and use velcro tape or grafting tape to attach the stems to the wood. But itā€™ll look a lot nicer if you chop it. I know youā€™re very nervous about that, so Iā€™d suggest looking up air layering. This will let you grow a root system on the stem before you cut, so you know the propagation is already healthy and ready to plant. Very low-risk. Once you have some good rooted cuttings you can pot them up near the back of a pot with a good support. Theyā€™ll take a little time to put out new growth while the roots fill the pot more, but then theyā€™ll grow much bigger and happier than you have now.

    My monstera was the same about 15 years ago. When I got her I didnā€™t know much about them so this is what I didā€¦i bought 6 ft wooden stakes (I would put at least 3) clean up any old leaves or broken stems and then I used the green Velcro strips to tie them up. Face all of your leaves forward if possible like K suggestedā€¦.it wonā€™t be easy since the stems want to do their own thing but once I did this my monstera took off and now is about 8 foot tall giving me at least 5 leaves every two months šŸ˜
