Hi! New to growing African Violets. I bought this one off of facebook marketplace and it already seems to have brown spots. Can I add the ‘Clean Kelp seaweed fertilizer’ or does it have to be a violet specific one. Hoping I can help it grow. The newer leaves are not damaged so that good.

Did this get wet? Those look like water damage to me.

It might have. I’ve only watered it once and bottom watered it.

The leaves are very sensitive! I water mine a very small amount at a time, making sure not to get any water on the leaves, stems, flowers. I usually water once a week. Let all of the excess drip out 🥰

Only African violet fertilizer for these guys. I have my babies in African violet pots. They water themselves. Agreed with above. Probably water damage on the leaves.

What is different about an African Violet pot?

It self waters. You put the water in the bottom and then it absorbs as needed. Easier for beginners as well. Because then you don’t have to worry about leaves getting wet. Just making sure it has water and fertilizer when needed.

Amazon. There is also this soil. RePotme African Violet soil. It’s expensive but my violets love it. Also, on Amazon. I tried the miracle grow and a few others that did not like it at all. Only the rePotme soil they have been thriving in. Not saying you have to buy it. Just a suggestion. My local nursery has them as well. They even put you on a list when they don’t have them so when they do they call you.

I bought one of off Amazon. Thank you so much for the suggestion. I’ve also read I could prune the damaged leaves so the plant doesn’t expend energy to maintain but I don’t want to cause it stress when I’m about to repot it soon.

If you need to remove leaves. It’s okay to remove them. When I get my violets. If they need a prune while repotting then I prune. They just look skinny for a second till they leaf again.
