How would I start with growing plants in water? I’ve been curious, but scared (not propagation, but replacing soil with water) I heard from a friend that it might be good for my spider plant. I don’t want to kill it, I’ve gone through 3 of these little buggers 😔. Any advice?
What direction does this window face? It definitely looks like a watering issue. Since it’s in terra cotta which absorbs water fast, and in a window presumably getting summer light and heat and the leaves are grayish, it needs a better watering system. Is that why you ask? If you wanna leave it in the pot, does the water drain immediately through it? If so, poke some holes with chopsticks in the dirt and try watering it from underneath going forward. If dirt starts to pull away from the pot and have a gap all the way around it or runs straight through the pot without hitting the roots then it’s not getting the hydration that it needs and a regular water just isn’t gonna do anything. If you’d prefer it live in water indefinitely, your best bet is to put fresh, healthy baby/pups in the water, vs an already stressed plant. Taking the plant from one extreme to another, can shock it and make the health worse. Water also doesn’t contain any nutrients so you’d have to supplement that. Water propagation is something that’s temporary and doesn’t require all the hoopla, so if you plan on that being a permanent home, just plan on changing the water out frequently, providing nutrients and making sure that it’s getting proper care, etc.

Plain water may not work for an extended time but you could transfer to leca. It may be more involved than you realize. Leca needs to soak a day or two. Need to remove all the soil from the roots. Spider plant has big roots so this may be easy. Add leca to container. Then add plant. Add water to bottom of current roots. They should not be in water. Plant will grow water roots. Check out Leca Queen on YouTube. There is a lot to learn. I have several plants in Leca—-semi hydro. Should have specialized planter too.
