Most cactus/succulents grow slowly. How much light are you giving it? Any fertilizer? You could also check the roots to make sure they're healthy.

It sits in a west facing window. Maybe not enough light. I think I sprayed with a succulent fertilizer once but thought I read these don’t really need it. Will be checking the roots today

If it's not toast I would move it to a chunkier mix. A lot of those pre-made succulent mixes are heavy on the peat and are atrocious. Just use a bit of potting soil, perlite, bark, pumice or akadama. And either move it to sunnier window or a growlight

Yes! I have my home made succulent mix that works amazing. Just never got around to putting him in it 😭 fingers crossed these roots save his life

I’ve repotted several of my cacti/succulents in a commercial succulent potting mix by Miracle Grow. It says it’s formulated from spagnum peat moss, processed forest products, fertilizer, and a wetting agent; I’ve wondered about it, since it seems to be sort of like dust. How much pearlite would you add to a regular potting soil mix? Also, I usually fertilize my plants with each watering; I’ve wondered if this should be the same for my cactus/succulents? TIA… 🤗💚🪴

Yea, the peat can make it really hydrophobic, but then if it does such the water up it's too much. I usually mix this in equal parts, with fox farm ocean being the potting soil portion. I Definitely don't tend to fertilize my cacti/succulents as much as my tropicals (except the fruit bearing ones) but I'd say i do it every 2-4 weeks with Schultz

Not an expert, but I’m thinking most cacti are not supposed to be that brown

Wowww you’re absolutely right, just looked back at the pic when I got it and it was green 😭 I didn’t even notice it changed. It’s honestly in a terrible succulent mix I’m planning to repot today. Will get a look at the roots then.

Ohhhh bummerrrr, yeah the fertilizer might’ve given it a swift burning death lol. I agree with Wolfen, it’s probably a goner. I’d recommend trying Euphorbia, they give the cacti fix but grow rather fast

It still has roots and they don’t look terrible? I just peaked but I’ll take a closer look later. If the roots are okay, does he have a chance?

I think it'll just depend on if they're healthy any why it turned brown. There are some species that are more orange brown which is why I didn't think anything of the color till you posted the before.

I'm not sure, there's a few cactus that have the puffer tops, I was thinking a type of pilosocereus. I know there's a few cactus guru in here, they may know.

Yeah I’d recommend posting the old picture of your cactus on the plant identification forum on here and see if anyone knows. Theres also a cactus/succulent group too
