Ficus Tineke - Deformed new leaves? Help! Hi everyone! I received this beautiful Ficus Tineke as a gift, and I’m dealing with some weird new growth. The first leaf it grew in my care came out fine, but the two leaves that grew after that are deformed (see pictures). I initially checked for thrips (did not find any) but still sprayed with a precautionary mix of neem oil and alcohol. Has anyone experienced this before on their variegated rubber trees? Does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening and how I can stop it? Thanks so much! Here are my current care details: Light: Bright, indirect east light. Watering: I let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Fertilizer: Fertilized 3 weeks ago (about a week before I noticed the deformation on the second leaf).

I can’t diagnose the issue, but I’d continue to treat for pests a couple times a week just to be safe. I personally believe your tree needs higher light, outside, south facing, or west windows would be better.

Are the holes there right when opened, or a few days after? If immediately, then it could be damaging itself trying to unfurl, especially if not enough humidity the leaves get stuck. If afterwards there could be pest eating the leaves, but you would probably see it on other leaves too.

Thanks you for the comments. Could humidity also cause the irregular shape of the leaves? Or is that a seperate issue?

Possibly low humidity while it unfurled? That has torn a few of my pothos leaves…

Most likely the leaf got damaged when trying to unfurl, the leaf still looks like it’s trying to harden. I had this issue with my red bristle philodendron when I first got it from the store.

like other commenters say, mechanical damage from unfurling with low humidity. it looks like that leaf coming in might try to do it too. you can prevent this by adding a humidifier or giving the unfurling petiole a 5min warm compress daily once it starts unsheathing itself
