Hey there! Anyone want to help me get a read on this plant I just adopted from a neighbour? Looks pretty dry and like a pet maybe chewed off some leaves. Thanks in advance!

It doesn’t seem quite like a Christmas cactus but it definitely could be. Just keep an eye out for it while it’s growing

I believe it is a thanksgiving cactus! But why the red on the leaves?

It’s very dusty too. Have you checked the root situation?

Not yet - I’m worried about disturbing the plant. What’s the best way to do that? Not so much dusty as covered in pet hair!

Yes, it’s pretty gross… 😔 Plants need to be cleaned too. In order to check the roots you’re gonna have to pull it out, unfortunately. I personally would unpot, wash, and repot with a new medium.

Ok! I think I’ll wait a bit so that it does experience shock, but I’ll give that a go - thanks!

I haven’t had a holiday cactus before but succulents in general handle having their roots messed with quite well. I un pot my smaller succulents every couple months to check their root health, more often if they look like they are struggling. I have never had one act like it noticed, but I have caught lots of issues early doing that. I don’t know if it needs to be repotted or not, I just wanted to encourage you that it shouldn’t hurt it or stress it when the time does come.❤️

It looks like a very sun stressed thanksgiving cactus

Definitely thanksgiving cactus and apart from the pet fur coat it has it looks pretty good! It has gotten a lot of sun but it’s nothing to worry about. They do enjoy being pretty root bound I will repot my Xmas cactus this coming year (been 3 years) They like lots of bright indirect light and will bloom almost year round if you make sure they have long periods of dark/night hours

Great advice! I noticed it had some blooms too! I love when we as a community encourage each other like this.❤️ I don’t own one so I will defer to you, but maybe it is ready to be watered too?

It does look about ready to be watered. They’re really a very hearty plant though so I wait until they get a bit more wrinkly because I’m a notorious over waterer lol

And 10000% yes. We are all human and make mistakes!! I have a few (or more) plants that I’ve messed up and everyone here has been so helpful!
