If anything, take it out of the dirt, see what you’re working with, and scrub the pot that it’s in. If you have your own dirt on hand I’d switch it out, just in case of bugs.

i always find bugs in my home depot plants so it's not a bad idea. plus as a new plant parent it's good to get your hands dirty :)

i also despise self watering planters.
4 Me gustaalright so im for sure about to go get some potting soil!
0 Me gustaand are you implying to repot it in a regular pot? im sure it would make sense because i've seen negative things about self watering pnes

it depends on the self watering planter, there are some good ones but most of them have the plant sitting in water for too long

Try to pot it in a nursery pot (plastic, drainage holes on bottom). My Kroger has them. You can then put it inside any type of decorative cache pot. This helps with aeration, ability to bottom water, easier to see root growth, etc.
1 me gustaCouple of tips that I wish I had known in the beginning! • Make sure the pot fits the size of the root system, not much bigger. I actually find that a lot of plants sold at big box stores are sold with too large of pots, which cause the soil to stay wet for too long & lead to root rot. • Make sure to have well-draining soil. An easy mix would be half perlite, half potting soil. I even have a pothos growing in just bark and perlite and it loves it. • Some people will say to wait a couple weeks before repotting. For sensitive plants, this is a good idea, but I don’t think it’s necessary for pothos. They’re hardy. Repotting early will also reduce the risk of pests
3 Me gustai actually just repotted it.. was very tedious because i'm afraid of damaging the roots. i used whitney farms organic raised bed mix because one of my friends who has plants uses it. i put it into a pot around the same size, but i dont think it's too large. hopefully this is okay, but if it dies then i will try again :) HOPEFULLY it wont tho.. haha (also i'm not keeping it outside, thats just where i repotted it)
2 Me gustaOh yeah I think that looks good! As long as the soil is dry before you water it, it’ll be totally fine :)
1 me gustathank you so much!!
1 me gustaAlso, if you’re saying you’ve only got Home Depot to buy from, I wanna warn you in advance to avoid buying Miracle Grow. Their stuff keeps the soil damp for WAY TOO LONG. It can mean a death sentence to a new plant even when you’re watering it normally or under watering. Highly recommend getting Espoma’s Organic All-Purpose Soil Mix, and adding a bag of perlite to the mix if you’re worried about overwatering. Their cactus and succulent mix is also my favorite. And I haven’t tried Foxfarm’s Ocean Forest All-Purpose Mix, but I’ve heard great reviews about it and all the plant nurseries I live around rave about it, along with Espoma. Just wanted to let you know if you did repot yours in Miracle Grow. I repotted three of my plants in Miracle Grow succulent soil with extra perlite two weeks ago and within 2 weeks it gave 2 of my perfectly healthy plants root rot and their soil was STILL wet after 2 WEEKS. I watered them once 14 days ago. THATS how bad it is when I say it doesn’t dry out fast enough. It can really kill your plant before you even have the chance to learn how to take care of it.
0 Me gustaThey sell the Miracle Grow almost exclusively for their houseplants, sadly, because they have a deal with Miracle Grow to sell their brand. (Think of Behr being the paint brand exclusive to Lowe’s. It’s like that.) I got mine from Ace Hardware, because it’s an independently owned chain, or my local plant nurseries. My real tip is to call ahead and ask if the store has it in stock before you end up going from store to store trying to find something other than Miracle Grow. Not all Ace’s carry it, but one of mine does. I went to 3 different stores trying to find my soil because Lowe’s, Walmart, and Home Depot all sell Miracle Grow, and it took me calling one of my local nurseries to get some.
