Would it be okay to completely change the dirt this hibiscus is in?… | Anything about plants | Planta-community

Would it be okay to completely change the dirt this hibiscus is in? My gramma just gave me the plant bc she could no longer move it due to her age with how heavy it was. She kept it in her sun room during the colder months and in the summer she would pull it out to get the warm air and sun. What can I do to help it? I gave it a bunch of water and these 2 pictures are only about 3 hours apart.

I always check the soil and roots. If your grandmother has had a difficult time lifting the plant, perhaps she hasn’t changed the soil in a while and that will help perk it up. I can see the difference in three hours so you might want to give it a day or two to settle in and then change the soil. I would ask your grandmother when she last changed it.

Whenever I have a plant that may not recover I try to propagate a few pieces in the event the plant tries to kick the bucket. At least you'll have a new plant on it's way. Perhaps give a fresh potted piece to your grandmother. I'm sure she would enjoy having a small plant that she can manage.

I would leave it be for a day or 2 to absorb water before you do anything. Let it get use to its new space a bit.

I feel like it can go both ways. I like to let my plant transition, and separate from other plants in case of pests. But if it’s struggling, I would check out how the roots look and see if the plant fits in the pot. If the plants root ball is small in a pot way too big, the plant won’t be as happy. Also, to the 1st comment, it could be a while since it was repotted so I would likely do this anyways while you’re checking everything out. If there is rot, cut all dead roots and then spray hydrogen peroxide on the rest. Put on mycorrhiza (root crack) when you repot and give the appropriate soil mix (not familiar what to use for hibiscus). And propagation is a great idea too! Just want to help reinforce what everyone’s said! Send an update once you make a decision on your next steps. Good luck!
