Distilled, reverse osmosis, or filtered water. No minerals or fertilizer. Full sun. It’ll catch its own flies being outside. No soil. Use sphagnum moss and keep wet. Not damp, wet. Doesn’t like to dry out. It’ll go dormant in the winter when it gets colder and die back. But the plant is alive at its base and roots, and will grow back in the spring. Enjoy! They’re so fun to look at! I’m going to get more carnivorous plants after getting my Venus fly trap 👍

Is it genuinely better to use sphagnum moss than soil? I bought a Venus fly trap awhile ago and never repotted it. I have a bunch of sphagnum moss from a plant order I could replant it in if it’s honestly going to help it thrive. I don’t have a ton of sunlight for it so I want to help it grow as much as possible.

I tried using fridge water at first and it started reacting poorly. The roots are really sensitive and the minerals can be harsh on them. A grow light maybe?

Yes, it’s better to use sphagnum moss instead of soil. Do not let it dry out. As JB said, keep it wet. Mine is in s.moss in a pot, inside a cup (looks basically like what yours is in). I refill the water when it gets to the base of the VF pot.
