too hot inside, too wild outside: what should i do with my plants while i travel? 😄 hey plant people! 🌱 i live in nyc and will be traveling for about 3 weeks this summer. i’m trying to figure out the best way to keep my plants alive while i’m gone. i have around 15 plants, some big and some small ones. i have an outdoor patio and was thinking of leaving them outside so they get fresh air instead of being stuck in my hot, closed-up apartment, but i’m worried about the unpredictable summer weather—nyc can get really hot and also have sudden heavy rains and windy days. would building something like a diy awning or cover be enough to protect them? or would it be better to leave them inside and ask a neighbor to stop by once a week to water them? (though i’m not sure how well they'll do in the heat without good airflow) would love to hear how others have handled this—any tips or advice would be super appreciated! thanks! šŸ™šŸ’š

I would definitely ask the neighbor to take care of them

Get like a babysitter for your plants. Or get the neighbors and ask for pictures of them to see how they are doing while you are away.

I would ask the neighbor for sure because you put them outside you might have to come back a fight pest.. I would consider getting an oscillating fan to give air circulation while gone or leave on ceiling fans on low. consider watering your plants really good before leaving then insert watering globes in the plants until you return. However they only last one to two weeks so that second week you can ask the neighbor to go check the globes and just refill the ones that’s empty. I use these for my potted plant outside and it helps if I’m gone for about 3 days in the sun, so inside will be even better

thanks Yolanda! 🄰 I honestly hadn’t thought about pest. I’ll definitely keep them inside, add the globes and ask for my neighbors to check on them on the second week.

You have to get someone who knows plant care and someone you trust with your plants. You have to decide if you trust someone to come into your home or can find someone willing to foster the plants while you are gone. You don’t have that many plants. You could possibly leave them with family, friends or a coworker. The worry would be moving the rubber plant. They don’t like being moved. An alternative is to make a mini clear plastic bag terrarium around each plant or around a group of small plants. We used structure like chopsticks to keep the plastic bags from collapsing and from touching the leaves to avoid rot on sensitive plants. We mist and watered before closing off the bag leaving a small opening for air. You can use cloches and terrariums and even an old fish tank with a cover. We used this before going out of town for almost 4 weeks. We had about 20 indoor plants and a few outdoor potted elephant ears and crinum lilies. The neighbors watered the outside potted plants.
