Will this plant make it/is it dead? This is a string of buttons I think it was called. My dog managed to climb the kitchen counter and started eating it before I caught him. He has never climbed the kitchen counter before, I don’t know how he even got up there! But I got the plant around a year ago from Walmart. It was barely alive there which is why I got it, I hoped to help it. :( I don’t have much experience with plants. I recently ordered a terracotta pot for it and am waiting for it to arrive. But I’m worried that my dog killed it. Its roots at the top are loopy and falling down and I don’t know is it saveable? Any advise would be appreciated thank you 😞

I don’t think your dog killed it! The green stem still looks alive. 😊 I’d cut off the completely brown/dead growth. When you repot it, make sure the terracotta pot has a drainage hole and use a fast-draining cactus/succulent mix with plenty of perlite or pumice. The soil looks pretty wet, and String of Buttons prefers to dry out completely between waterings. If the remaining stem starts getting soft or mushy near the soil line, you can cut the healthy portion above it and propagate it — they root pretty easily from stem cuttings. One other important thing since your dog was eating it: String of Buttons (Crassula) is considered toxic to dogs, so I’d keep it somewhere he can’t reach it going forward. ❤️

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post and sharing advice. This is the soil that I'm using, is it not good? Should i find a succulent mix instead? I'm not sure what perlite and pumice is, but l will look into that and get some. I did just water it before that photo, but l've been waiting 3 weeks between watering each time. Is that a good amount or should I do 2 weeks instead? I also cut off the brown growth as you said 😊 yes I read that it's toxic to dogs and cats and that's why I put in the kitchen window but after discovering he can apparently get up there, I moved it into another rooms very high up window that l myself have to climb the couch to get to each time 😆thank you again very much

It might live. I’ve had a couple that looked more dead than that that came back.

Not dead but struggling. Definitely looks overwatered and in too big of a pot. I agree use cactus soil something well draining and make the pot much smaller that little plant can probably do fine in a two or three inch pot. I don't think it's a string of buttons but I could be wrong. It is definitely a succulent and they require very little water. I would water it until water comes from the bottom of the pot but only water every 10 to 14 days. Maybe less in the winter. Depends on where you live too.
