Hi! I just started getting into plants and my mom gave me a cutting of this big tree she’s had for 20 years but doesn’t actually know the name of. I waited until the cutting had a lot of roots and then planted it in just regular fertilizer. Can anyone tell me how to keep it alive/what it even is?

This is a fiddle leaf fig. I’m worried about how it’s planted. It has a good chance of rot the way it’s buried.

Should I put it in a smaller pot? The roots were about 3-4 inches long when I planted it

I always start in a smaller plastic cup. Helps it establish a good root system. Your plant is buried too deep. Think of it as your body, your legs the roots, you want the soil up to your waist where yours is buried past your neck. The roots should be in the soil with the stem above soil. You can use a straw or stick to hold it up till the roots establish. Your setup just has a high chance of rot. Doesn’t mean it won’t work.

Ohh ok I see, I’ll switch it up a little bit I don’t want to risk rot. Thank you so much!

Actually you can just take out some soil till you get to the stem, about an inch of soil. Makes it easier. Don’t have to pull the plant and repot.
