Hi everyone! Brand new here 👋🏻 and to plants 😅 I always used to joke that I had a black thumb and everything I touched died. I did manage to keep a really sturdy little cactus alive for a few years as a teenager, but eventually I even killed that! But last year I was given a plant (Planta says it’s a silver inch leaf?) and have managed to nurse it back to health twice. The first time the custodian knocked it off my desk, and the second time it broke off nearly at the root due to residual damage from being knocked off the desk 🙄. Anyway, it’s been fun taking care of the little baby, and I was given another plant for my birthday a few months ago that I’ve managed to keep alive, and my mom was surprised I got multiple blooms out of it, so I figure maybe I’m not so bad at this plant thing after all. At the very least, if I can learn to teach algebra, build out a cargo van, and fix computers (all things I NEVER thought I would do), then I can totally learn gardening. Right?? Anyway, two questions: any vital tips for a beginner?? And any plants you would recommend for my first plant purchase?? Thanks!! 😊

succulents tend to be pretty easy since they can go a while without watering, string of hearts are one of my favorites because of the look of them and you can tell they need water by the firmness of their leaves highly recommend

If you buy from a big box chain store, I dump the soil, rinse the plant and roots well, get a better soil or potting mix for that particular plant. Helps to keep from bringing infected plants home. Also most plants will like to be watered less than you think, most problems arise from watering too much, or too often. Snake plants, pothos, spider plant, philodendrons, peperomia, ZZ plant… most of those are fairly straightforward and simple to care for.

That’s a great tip, I never would have thought of that as something that might need doing haha. And I definitely was worried about over watering, so I tend to give less water and then check the soil and leaves in the following days to see if I under did it 😅 And thanks for a list of options!! I’m not sure what my first plant purchase will be yet…. My roommate received a poinsettia which she nearly killed, so I adopted it. So now I have three plants that I acquired mostly on accident, but they’re all doing well so far!!

A lot of people recommend succulents and cacti as beginner friendly, but I disagree. A good plant for beginners fits their style of keeping plants. Do you forget plants require water for months at a time or are you a helicopter plant parent that constantly wants to be doing something in the dirt? I killed every succulent, air plant, and cactus I got through my teenage years because I overwatered the heck out of them. Even as a younger adult, I had a hard time keeping my succulents alive. Once I started getting into tropicals that required watering more often, I found it easier to leave my poor succulents alone and now everyone is much happier in our home lol As far as recommendations, if you're a forgetful gardener, snake plants and aloes are great! If you like to show your love with watering, syngoniums and dieffenbachia prefer a bit more attention than succulents!

Not sure if you watch Tuca and Bertie, but this scene was such a call out for younger me lol

I definitely used to be the variety that would forget I had a plant, let alone that in needed water. Which is why I was so surprised that I was managing to keep two non-succulents alive for any length of time lol. But now I find that I just sort of think “how are my plants doing?” Every day or two and go around touching their leaves and their dirt and talking to them and it’s kind of fun, so I’m eager to get more plants to fuss over. Planta has helped me slow down a little. According to the app I WAS probably overwatering before, but they seemed healthy enough so 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think it’s because I was paranoid about overwatering (especially since I didn’t have any pots with drainage and I knew that was a bad thing because my mom talks about drainage a lot 😆) and so I was physically checking the dirt and leaves at least once every two days and just giving them a splash whenever it felt dry. So I was watering fairly often but only a little at a time, if that makes sense? Planta giving a schedule has given me some more confidence, but I still find myself touching them all the time just to check haha Anyway, I guess I’m not entirely sure what kind of plant parent I am these days?? I’m just glad they don’t cry. I have three-month-old twin nephews and I’ve been watching them a lot lately, and it’s made me VERY GRATEFUL that plants don’t cry. I’m going to have to look up the plants you suggested, I know what snake plants and aloe are, but those other two names had my eyes popping out of my head lol Thanks!
