I’m in zone 7a and planta is telling me that some of my plants need winterized like my miniature rose. It says to put it in a cool space- but I’m in an apartment and have a majority of tropical plants. It’s been growing indoors this whole time. Will it be okay even if it won’t get cold? Any tips/advice? Thank you!

Since your friend is in zone 7a and has a miniature rose growing indoors, here are some tips for overwintering and keeping it healthy: Indoor Growing & Winterizing: 1. Cooler Temperatures for Dormancy: Miniature roses typically benefit from a dormancy period in winter, which helps them bloom more vigorously in the next growing season. Although indoors, try to place the plant in a cooler spot, like near a drafty window or an unheated room, ideally between 40-50°F (4-10°C). 2. Adjust Watering: During this cooler period, the rose will require less water than in the growing season. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, but don’t let it become bone dry. The goal is to keep it barely moist. 3. Sunlight Requirements: Since your friend is growing the rose indoors, make sure it still receives adequate light, even during winter. A south-facing window is ideal, or supplement with a grow light if necessary. 4. Humidity & Airflow: Roses appreciate good airflow and moderate humidity. If the indoor air is very dry (common in winter), consider using a humidity tray or a humidifier. Ensure that the plant has enough space around it to allow air to circulate and prevent mildew or mold. 5. Monitor for Pests & Disease: Indoor conditions can attract pests like spider mites or aphids. Regularly inspect the leaves and stems, and treat any issues promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Is It Okay If It Doesn’t Get Cold? If the rose doesn’t experience a dormancy period, it might still grow indoors but may not bloom as profusely in the next season. While dormancy is beneficial, it is not strictly necessary if your friend prefers to keep it indoors year-round. By providing cooler temperatures, reducing water, and ensuring proper light, your friend can help mimic winter conditions for their miniature rose, even in an apartment setting with tropical plants.
