Does Planta have the Rocky Mountain Pine bonsai in its database? I cannot seem to find it and would appreciate guidance as I am growing one from a seed.

To help your friend’s Rocky Mountain Pine bonsai thrive, here are some general care tips: 1. Light Requirements • Place the bonsai in a location with full sun for at least 6-8 hours a day. Rocky Mountain Pines thrive with plenty of light, so a south-facing window or outdoor space is ideal. 2. Watering • Water consistently but ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot. Water when the topsoil feels slightly dry but not completely dried out. Pines don’t like “wet feet,” so avoid letting the pot sit in water. • During hotter months, you may need to water more frequently. In winter, reduce watering but do not allow the soil to dry out completely. 3. Soil & Potting • Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix. A mix with a balance of inorganic materials (like akadama, pumice, and lava rock) is typically good for pine trees. These materials retain moisture without becoming waterlogged. • If using regular potting soil, add perlite or sand to improve drainage. 4. Fertilization • Feed the bonsai with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season (spring to early fall). Use an organic bonsai fertilizer if possible, and follow the recommended dosage. • Reduce or stop fertilization in late fall and winter when the tree goes dormant. 5. Temperature & Humidity • Rocky Mountain Pines prefer cooler temperatures and can handle frost. However, protect the bonsai from extreme cold by placing it in a sheltered area during winter. • These pines do well in dry climates, so high humidity isn’t necessary, but ensure there’s adequate air circulation to prevent mold and mildew. 6. Pruning & Shaping • To encourage dense foliage and maintain the bonsai shape, pinch back new growth (candles) in late spring or early summer. Do this by pinching off half or a third of the length of each new candle. • Prune dead or overly long branches throughout the growing season to maintain the shape and health of the bonsai. 7. Wiring & Styling • If your friend plans to wire the tree for styling, the best time is late fall or early winter when the tree is dormant. Be gentle and check the wires periodically to ensure they aren’t cutting into the bark as the tree grows. 8. Repotting • Repot the bonsai every 2-3 years in early spring before new growth starts. This will help maintain root health and provide the plant with fresh soil. 9. Pest & Disease Prevention • Watch for common pests like aphids, spider mites, and scale. If pests are spotted, treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. • Ensure proper airflow and sunlight to prevent fungal diseases. With careful attention to these factors, your friend’s Rocky Mountain Pine bonsai can grow healthy and strong! If they encounter specific issues, they might need to make adjustments to one or more of these care elements.
