Hello! So I am SUPER new to plants but I was just gifted a few to get started and I have some questions! First off, I was given a Wandering Jew and my family friend said that the plant has been struggling for a while and she’s recently repotted it in hopes of saving it, however I’ve had it for about a month now and it still seems to be struggling. I’ve read that they’re very thirsty plants and need lots of water, but I don’t want to drown it. I also recently realized that the pot she had it in does not have any drainage holes, so I think the roots are probably suffering because the bottom of the plant looks sick but the top seems super healthy🥺 I’m going to switch over to a pot with actual drainage, but I’ve seen a lot of posts about propagating Wandering Jews and I’m wondering if that’s what I should do or if I should just trim the bad roots once I repot it. My second thing is I was given a Devil’s Ivy, however I noticed that there’s two different types of leaves on the plant. So I think she put Devil’s Ivy and Heartleaf Philodendron in the same pot, but I’ve heard that Devil’s Ivy can be somewhat invasive so I’m not sure if I should try to separate them because it seems like the heartleaf is struggling a little bit!🥺 Finally, she gave me a Poinsettia and I am TERRIFIED of killing it because I’ve heard how difficult they are😭 Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated!! First picture is Noodle (Wandering Jew) Second picture is Herbert (Devil’s Ivy/Heartleaf Philodendron) Third picture is Richard (Poinsettia)

I put my wandering Jew in a self watering pot with regular potting soil and it’s done well. They don’t like getting their leaves wet and that can cause them to die. They often produce new vines where old leaves die off. They are super easy to propagate. I stick stem cuttings directly into the soil, but they can also propagate well in water. I personally would just leave it in soil. They love light and get lanky without enough light. I also don’t think it’s possible to overwater these plants (at least in a pot with drainage). Good luck!

Thank you so much!! I’m excited to get a new pot that actually drains to see if it does better, I can’t believe I didn’t check that when I got her🤦‍♀️😂 But I may try propagating to see if I can get it to grow a little better!❤️

It is absolutely possible to overwater these plants…don’t ask me how I know. 😆

Agreed. Soooo easy to propagate. I had a large mother plant, and I have a hanging propagator that has 15 little test tubes. I put two or three stems in each one of those. After a few weeks, there were so many roots that I made an entirely new full plant (photo just for giggles). If it gets leggy, don’t be afraid to whack the crap out of it, stick the propagations up in the middle and it’ll grow back. Starting from just one little strand will take longer, but you’ll get there.

Thank you so much!! Your plant is BEAUTIFUL😍 I’ve been looking online and I’ve seen the little test tube things, do you think using water would be easier or just the soil? I get so nervous to cut the plants but I know it’s necessary for them to be healthier💀😂

I’ve never tried in soil, but I’ve heard that it’s successful for people. I find that this is just super easy for me because I can put it in the water and forget about it until it’s ready, or until I have enough to make a new plant.

And then I just hung it right here from the cabinet by my window and it does really well

Oh as for the other 2, it sure does look like two plants in one pot. I don’t know how easy it would be to separate them depending on how long they’ve been together. But from the outside, it looks fairly healthy? As for the poinsettia, love the name Richard 😆 I don’t know anything about growing them, but I do know they’re toxic to animals. FYI, if you’ve never heard.

Thank you my dad helped me come up with that one!🤣 And I saw that today when I scanned the plant, so I’m trying to keep it towards the back of the shelf so if any parts do manage to fall off it’ll be behind the shelf, and I’m also looking into something taller to keep it further away from the doggos to make sure they’re safe!🥹❤️ Thank you so much for letting me know!! And my concern with the heartleaf is the stems are a bit loose at the soil and the stems seem kind of yellow, but I have no clue if that’s normal

Hmm unless the plant is known for having yellow stems as a whole I would say probably not a great sign. Though after enough time and a plant aging, usually the bottom leaves will be the first to age and yellow and fall off. Is there a local nursery you could take it to and just ask for an opinion?

i’d propagate the wandering jew, i usually cut about a inch below the stem, let it callus, and prop in water, i have also propped them in soil before and the roots grew like CRAZY i also like to keep my props in a window that gets a decent amount of light
