Hey guys! I hope everybody’s having a good evening. I have this Chinese evergreen and as you can tell, she’s a leggy girl. I am looking for advice on making her more bushy, if possible? Could I cut the plant down to those bottom leaves? Then I’d propagate the top and plant it (I’ve done it once before but it grew right back as you can see 🤣) All advice is welcome as I am new to this plant stuff. I don’t wanna kill it. Thanks in advance.

My first thought is poor soil (as in nutrients) and too large of a pot. It depends on if you are using fertilizer or just changed to soil and what the roots look like. If they aren’t filling this size pot I’d recommend using a smaller one so that the soil is drying out before watering. Not enough light could also be a factor. I believe these like bright indirect. You could cut it back again and propagate the cutting while also leaving this to grow two new shoots.

If you decide to cut it

I repotted it into this pot a few months ago. I was thinking of adding a few more aglaonema in with it since I see people plant multiple of them in pots frequently. It actually had a second one in there when I first got it but it died. I just started fertilizing it about a month ago and these new leaves at the top have formed since I started doing that so I think it’s working. I’m still learning everything so your advice is definitely appreciated! ❤️

I just wanted to thank you again for your advice. I cut it exactly where you drew that line. It is looking much better these days.

If it’s leggy, that’s often the result of insufficient light. So maybe cut it but also move it closer to the window?

I think you are right. It was in my room for a good year and a half and my room is mostly indirect light. I recently moved it in the kitchen where it gets partial sunlight and seems much happier in there.

Mine did the same thing until I got it a bright grow bulb 💡 I don’t know about cutting it. They do droop after repotting so I think I would try more light first and do the research on cutting it

Yes that happened the first time I repotted it got a little sad and then bounced back. Thanks for the tips. I will make sure it’s getting plenty of light. It’s in the most well lit room in the house now.
