Calathea are definitely different and have been a challenge for me as well. I have killed many before getting the care some what right. Also some are more difficult than others. I’ve heard this one is. What has worked for me is 1. No direct light. Can burn the leaves. 2. They are very thirsty but don’t like wet feet so don’t let it go completely dry and give it a chunky mix for air flow and quick draining. Also if it’s a new plant then the conditions it was getting are probably very different to you home. Particularly the water which can be an issue if you have higher levels of chlorine in your tap water. They have to acclimate to your environment and care. Meaning even if it loses all of its leaves don’t throw it out because it will probably come back. Lastly many can attach spider mites so check for pests and webs. Also they like humidity and the fact that it’s called velvet calathea definitely implies that it probably wants more humidity.

Yeah. Depending in the strength of the light it is probably burning the leaves. So I’d move it. And yes. More humidity. Whatever that looks like for you. I don’t do it anymore because I don’t need to but I use to mist mine. But there are 2 schools of thought in that. Some say don’t mist but I never had a problem. Now I just shower the leaves throughly when I water and that seems to be working. But I don’t have that particular plant so I can’t be 100% sure that what worked for mine will work for you. But worth a try.
