Once all of my blooms are gone I always cut off the stem, down to the base. My orchid always comes back. Mine is getting ready to bloom again. I attached a photo so you can see last year’s cut stem under this year’s new one.

i really wouldn’t recommend cutting the stems back unless they’re shriveled and dead. a healthy firm orchid stem will flower again. forcing it to grow a new stem, especially repeatedly, can be stressful for the plant. i also would suggest checking out the root system of your orchid pictured, i see some dead dry roots that need to be trimmed. it may be chronically underwatered if it’s in a terracotta pot, orchids like lots of airflow but will need to be watered frequently in porous pots

It’s not an immediate chop, the stems on my plants have always shriveled up once done flowering. I’ve done it on multiple orchids for years and they always flower again. 🤷🏻‍♀️
