Yeah, it will depend on where you live. I’ll be happy to help brainstorm if you give us a general area ā˜ŗļø

Oh sweet! That’s a good place for growing houseplants outdoors. A large jade would be cool. They get more tree-like the bigger they get. Snake plants can get pretty tall too. You could probably even have large cacti if you don’t get a lot of rain or have a roof over the pot

If you’re patient, irises are fun because they multiply every year.

You have to determine how you plant to use the pot. I keep five pots 18 inch wide on my small entry for curb appeal. I change out the plants 3 times during the year in spring, summer and fall. I keep flowering plants and colorful foliage plants to add curb appeal. I use chrysanthemums in autumn. You can add shaped boxwood topiary or evergreens if you don’t want to bother with changing out plants in cold weather. Of course, the plants have to fit your climate.

Since you’re looking to plant outdoors in southern california, i definitely recommend growing something native! calscape has a huge list of plants that you can filter through, and each plant have a detailed profile written about it. My personal recommendation are lemonade berry and toyon (Hollywood is named for this plant!)
